XPLOR riders go wild in the Adirondacks
Over 100 riders hit the "XPLOR the Adirondacks" event in Lake George, New York on June 6th and 7th, where they picked up off-road tips and riding techniques from Paris-Dakar rallyist Jimmy Lewis. On both days, riders were put through the paces by Jimmy, conducting a variety of off-road drills ranging from proper body position to braking and acceleration tests. Lewis demonstrated many of the techniques, which was a thrill in itself as he's one of the best off-road riders in the world and had uncanny grace and balance on his G 650 Xchallenge. From tight turns to front brake skids to weighting the outside peg, every XPLOR rider grabbed a few more insights into how to be a better enduro rider.
Then, of course, it was time to put all those newfound skills into action, during a 70 mile self-guided ride winding through scenic Adirondack back roads and graded trails. Both days featured a complimentary lunch at the Stony Creek Inn, as well as free tickets to the Painted Pony rodeo. Jimmy also treated XPLOR riders with an incredible sight on Thursday night as he rode the HP2 Enduro in the rodeo with a cowboy seated on the back, who attempted to rope a calf. Jimmy and the cowpoke shot out of the chute in mad pursuit, but the baby beefer somehow got away from them. Later Jimmy also competed in barrel racing on the HP2 Enduro, but in the loose sand natural horsepower had the advantage over mechanical horsepower. However, judging from the crowd's response, the sight of the HP2 Enduro roosting around the rodeo ring provided great entertainment.
XPLOR riders also had the chance to test-ride several G 650 Xchallenges, which were available on both days. Those who got there early enough got to uncork the feisty thumper on some great back roads and experience BMW's new lightweight dual sport machine. The Americade rally is one of the most relaxing and mellow motorcycle events in the U.S., but last week, thanks to Mr. Lewis and our 100 XPLOR riders, things got considerably more hardcore and exciting. We owe our gratitude to everyone who participated and especially to Jimmy, who once again delivered big-time and helped everyone reach new levels of riding ability.
