An Amazing Start by BMW for another Year of Successful Racing
The 2008 racing season in the U.S. started a few weeks ago, yet BMW has already grabbed several podium finishes in the ASRA/CCS road racing circuits, MOTO-ST endurance races and the Sandblast Rally. Perhaps the most impressive showing by BMW racing teams wasn’t a podium finish but crossing the checkered flag in 5th position at the iconic, 69-lap, 200 miles of Daytona 200 on Saturday, March 8th.
The English racer Richard Cooper onboard the new BMW HP2 Sport finished 5th overall in the Daytona 200, Formula Xtreme race. Another BMW racer, Brian Parriott, finished a very impressive 6th place, even though he crashed his bike during the early stages of the race. With no real damage to the bike or the rider, Parriott hopped back on his HP2 Sport, starting from the last spot, managing to finish in the top 10. His recovery was phenomenal. Brian and Richard are both racing on the BMW Motorsport team for the 24 hour at Le Mans – we wish them luck!
Nate Kern also had an amazing weekend at Daytona on March 1 and 2, with several podium finishes in ASRA/CCS and MOTO-ST racing on BMW R 1200 S. Nate along with his teammate Richard Cooper managed to finish on the podium in 3rd,, racing a bone stock R 1200 S, after his race bike was destroyed during a practice run. Unfortunately Nate had a disappointing Formula Xtreme race with an injury received during practice and did not finish there.
Since Daytona, Nate’s been back in the saddle with a 1st in CCS Thunderbike series and a 3rd place in Supertwins during a very wet and rainy Sunday, April 6, at Jennings GP in Jennings, FL. Nate having crashed pretty bad last summer was initially apprehensive in taking deep turns in the pouring rain, but the support of the BMW fans at the raceway gave him courage. “My BMW Motorcycles of Atlanta top tech Paul Wilson and I arrived at Jennings GP for the second round of the CCS Southeast Championship, it was already raining and was going to stay wet,” said Nate Kern. “By the time we unloaded the bikes, BMW riders started showing up with their rain gear on. ‘Man,’ I thought, ‘these riders braved the weather to see and hear their Boxer go around that track, running with the leaders.’ So, that really inspired me, I felt I was on a mission. So we did it. I received two 5th place finishes in CCS 600 Superbike and 750 Superbike, a 3rd in Supertwins, and 1st in Thunderbike.”
Carolina Motorsports Park, on the weekend of April 12 and 13, saw Nate, racing the awesome new BMW HP2 Sport to its first podium finishes in the U.S. – seven. podium finishes (including two first places) in seven races in the CCS Supertwins, 600 Supersport, Superbike, Grand Prix, 750 Supersport, Superbike and Thunderbike.
In the Sandblast Rally, on February 9, 2008, in Cheraw, SC, Team MAX BMW achieved six podium finishes including a 2nd place and 5th overall which was grabbed by the longtime dirt rider Mark Albertson aboard his HP2 Enduro.
