Hi there.

I posted this stuff over on another forum, but some folks thought I should do something similar here, and I thought that was a good idea so, here goes:

A few months ago, my friend Roma (xplor) and I competed in the Sandblast Rally down in South Carolina. With this one experience under our collective wing, we accidentally gave birth to the Airhead Rallye Team.  I ride a 1990 R100GSPD, and Roma rides a 1986 R80G/S. or GS. Cant remember.

We mostly ride in the Upstate New York, Western Massachusettes, Southern Vermont areas.

Here's a few shots of us down at the event which spawned our namesake.

These are our bikes waiting to be inspected at tech. Romas tank color changes with his mood. Its a Mood Tank. He doesnt like jewelry. This is what his tank looks like when he's serious.

This is one of the proud, dumb fathers. I have no idea what I'm about to get into.

Here's Roma tearing it up on Stage 4 or something.

 and me:

(this pic is resizing itself)

and Roma:

 and me:

We both Finished the race, which for myself, I found astonishing. Roma beat me by a few minutes, but I was helping him with his timekeeping, so he didnt beat me by quite as much as he might have. silly  We've got to stick together.

Since then, we've been laughing it up, up here.. with a few other adventures and practice sessions.

We dont get much Sand up here in the Northeast. What we got, if you didnt already know, is Mud. Trees. Water. More Mud. Stones. Slimey roots. Dirt. Rocks. Rivers. Washouts.

Our friend BoatMan often comes with us, bringing some much needed experience and wisdom, and a LOT of extra muscle for RallyeBike Extrication maneuvers. He rides an Oilhead, currently; But is part of the team, nonetheless, because its more like a state of mind, really. You know what I mean.

So Recently we've been adding Teamates to the roster.

Crusty25 has stepped up and willingly placed his R100GS upon the rocky alter of Glory. He had intended, originally, to attend the Sandblast with us and be baptized in the silicate seas, but alas, It was not to be. (Gawd, what a lame metaphor. Sorry.) He's made up for it though...

Ok, we're a bunch of yahoo's... there's no doubt, although I'm sure my team will tell me to go feck offlaughing  and speak for myself... but these boys can ride the Big Bikes really well. Anybody can handle a modern dirt bike, with awesome suspension and brakes, and no weight. It takes a certain kind of mindset to take these machines into the bush. The way these two throw them around, though, you'd think they were little 250lb dirtbikes.

SO we are loaded, and ready to ride. And you seriously ought to consider throwing some knobbies on your Big Bike andcoming out with us.

Stay tuned for more photos of flying pigs, waltzing cows, and dancing hippos on dirt parade. Pure A.R.T. baby.

 The Airhead Rallye Team:

We're Big,

We're Slow,

But we'll get to Finish Row,

Eventually!

This is great stuff.

Like Hannibal and his elephants, may not be pretty, but pretty darn effective.

Ride on ART!

I have seen some of your other posts and have to admit that you are luring me into buying an airhead.  My GSA1200 is a blast but there is something about those old boxers.  Keep the pics coming!

Count me in, as the West Coast extention.  Wish I had some action pics, but when your always riding the trails alone, kinda hard to get a good shot of yourself...  And who knows, I might even take a day off riding long enough to post some pics of my rides eventually.(Don't expect much till winter)

Ah, the lure of mud, sand, water, mud, rocks, mud, dirt, mud...

Looks like so very much fun!  Hopefully you'll spark a bit of interest from the pavement crowd to get out there and get dirty!

Thanks for a really great write up and fantastic photo coverage.

Thanks guys.  I would be delighted to be at least one person's inspiration to get out there. And I"m not even a BMW Parts supplier.  laughing  But I do keep the need for them alive.

West Coast: Youre in, but Be careful out there, alone.  We all do it, sometimes, but if I hadnt had my teammates handy today, I would have had to leave the old girl in the woods.  I popped the bead off this D606 today, and we only lost about 20 minutes getting it back in working order. I have a Cycle pump I carry with me. It took that, and 2 25g CO2 cartridges to get it back up to 25 lbs. I was runnign it high-- mid 30's, and it still hit hard enough to pop a bead.

Puffin, ART mascot, looks on approvingly

Damage also incurred in this weekends 632 mile 3-state Dualsport action:

A cracked Gas line:  Kind of hard to see... was spewing Gasoline all over the hot parts.

Fixed.

drip drip dripdripdripdripdrip drip dripdrip  Argh.

Midway up a diffficult section, the bike goes completely dead. Thought I hit the kill switch with the tankbag. Nope... GPS s wired direct, its still on, so the Battery is ok... Well, lets think here.... I hit a BIG BUMP and it went dead. No dash lights or anything w/ ignition on. Lets just look at the battery, shall we? It sounds like something just rattled itself loose.

Hmm. I know, the + terminal looks like a spider plant, Its ridiculous, I know.

But This doesnt look right:  I know what Im looking at,m but I cant tell if this pic is indicative;

Out of all those wires, this is one of the more important ones.

And to top it off, I started out the weekend with a spent front tire:

Its much worse now. Much less knobbely.

Rallye practice is hard work. Catch your naps when you can.

Sometimes I miss my kickstand.

Puffin is Pleased.
