Coast to Coast Backroads?

I heard there are some routes that travel coast to coast by using only back dirt roads. Anyone have any info on that? Planning a year long journey (my second) looking for some great places to ride in the USA. Alaska is on my list!

Any info or interest would be awesome!

THANKS

There has recently been an article about such an off road coast to coast route.  I seem to recall the article focused on the part in the Rockies, (there has also been a story about a north south route along the Rockies), I just cannot recall where i saw that. Seems like there was a book or an organization involved. May be linked to mountain biking also. Others may recall this. Why not try a Google search?

Hey Joe; I would really like some info on the backroads.  I want to take off the summer of 09' with my 17 year old son and back roads on a couple of GS's would be great.  I'm new into BMW's and this Xplor Forums site so an email to let me know you have some info would be great. Thanks in advance.

HI JIM:

What a great Idea, I am also working on taking my 19 year old , "Son", Nephew across the country, I thought the back roads would be better as he is also just learning to ride.

Well Lets see ther are two routes that have been already mapped, Canada to mexico I beleive the site is www.can2mex.com, or www.mex2can.com there is also one more that runs from TN. to CA.

It's call the trans american trail, not sure of the web site, but you cab google. Also check out the site WWW.horizonsunlimited.cm there is more info there then you can ever read! great site...

Keep in touch let me know how things are progressing...

The Trans America Trail is what your looking for, idea and maps made by a guy in california.

Many have tried it and succeeded, google for the site.

Also the bicyclist have a trans trail that uses both out of the way gravel and less traveled pavement, part of which goes thru Leakey TX and uses the D'Rose Inn as a possible stop over.

Just dig around a bit and you can find them or I can go back and find them for you.

One of my dreams/plans is a cross continent trip on gravel roads with my MTS someday and that ever aproaching Alaska trip led by Thomas in 09'??????????

Hey Joe:

Am new to the Forum, but not to BMWs.  A few years back, the AMA Magazine had a story about a couple of riders that cross-countried on backroads and dirt roads, including Alaska.  Memory is kind of fuzzy, but you could probably contact the AMA and find out about the article and the map/directions that were outlined in the story.  Also, saw a video, at the BMW shop I worked at, featuring a couple who did a cross country on their GS and F650. Some of the backroads that turned into dirt roads, definitely tested their skills.  Amazon.com might have videos on cross-country motorcycle touring as we had that video on sale at the shop. Hope that helps.  S/F usmcgunnyret
