I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND LETTING THE DEALER DO THE 600 MILE SERVICE. THEY HAVE TO RETORQUE THE HEADS AND DO THE VALVES. PLUS DRAIN THE REAREND NOW. AS FOR THE OIL CHANGE YOU CAN DO IT AT 3000 THEN LET THE DEALER DO 6000 AFTER THAT YOU CAN DO THEM ALL IF YOUR COMFORTABLE DOING THAT.

I just bought a R1200RT and would like to be able to do the mqjority of ther service myself(all the fluids and the valve adjustment. Does anyone know if this will affect my wrrantee? frank When I bought my R1150GS new, I asked the dealer what impact my doing the service would have on warrantee. He suggested that I bring the bike in for the head retorque at 600 miles. He also agreed that if I documented the service, I could perform other maintenance without voiding the warrantee. As a result, the only times I have been to the dealer for service was on two occasions for warranty replacement of the front wheel (excess run out) and the final drive (blistering paint). Boxers are straightforward regarding routine maintenance. However, I suggest that you talk to your dealer and procure the BMW CD Repair Manual as a reference for the work you do on your boxer. If you do your own maintenance, document your work and save all receipts for fluids, etc.

However, I suggest that you talk to your dealer and procure the BMW CD Repair Manual as a reference for the work you do on your boxer. The BMW CD Repair Manual (RepROM) for the R1200RT goes for $135 and requires a Windows computer. There is a brand new Haynes manual, BMW R1200 Twins Repair Manual 2004-2006: R1200GS/GSA, R1200ST, R1200RT, and R1200S that covers the R1200RT. You can buy it online for $24.46 from MotorBookStore.com. This manual is a genuine, paper-based book that you can take into your shop and hold in your greasy little hands -- no computer of any kind required.
