Hey all,

I have heard rumors about underground travel in the Las Vegas storm drains. (bums have been using them for years)  I even entered one and rode for about 5 miles.  Only thing is, it is hard to know where the hell you are or where you are going and where you can get out/in.  I am going to do some more invesigating this weekend with a GPS.  Does anyone know of any good entrances/exits or have mapped them at all?  I know it is not the safest travel but anything beats sitting in traffic in triple digits.

NVDOT would have as-builts of the construction plans available to the public.  The Stormwater District is probably maintaining a really cool GIS computer model of the system.

That's all I got.

I don't mean to rain on your parade or anything, but are you certain that your GPS would get reception down there?  I'd be looking at real paper maps I think....  And auxiliary lighting!

I really wanted to explore the storm drains last weekend but due to a sharp piece of something this is as far as I got.  As for the GPS, you are right, it will not work underground but at least you know where you are when you come out.  There are hundreds of tunnels, some are miles long and some are only 100 yards or so.  Thanks for the comments!

I even made a friend "Ace" and he seems to be an ace on storm drain travel.  I picked his brain and will use him for further refrence for sure.

Wow that's cool.  It makes me want to fly to LA and rent a bike.  I can see these drains becoming overcrowded with crazy bikers.  I assume this is illegal, but not enforced.  Or, are you chased out by the Federales once in a while?  Also, I see big fences.  How do you get in?  Are there gaps a bike can fit through or did people cut holes?

Due to the amount of bums living there they always keep any gate that a person can walk though open in case of a flood.  It is $2000 fine if you are caught.  News 3 in Las Vegas did a bit on it just yesterday.  You have to check this out!

Your handle is perfect for a guy who rides bum infested storm drains!  Seriously, you should win some kind of XPLOR award for most interesting and off the wall post.  After seeing this, I'd be carrying a weapon when riding down there (oh no, I don't want to get the weapon subject started again!).

PS-You may remember a post I made where my cousin drove off a road in Oregon and died.  He and his freind were not found for 3 weeks.  Please make sure someone knows what you are doing so that if you did have a problem, people would know where to look to help you.

VERY good advice. Even a broken leg can kill you in one of these tunnels if you can not stop bleeding, if you not to go into shock for some reason , if.......Too many "if"s.

It would be fun to investigate in a "explorer pace" or better doing that as a weekend ride with friends. But it won't worth to get that risk to "easier commute at triple digits". Get your car and hit the A/C button. Much safer ... smug

Injured motorcyclist spotted from air
Family finds man after renting copter to search for him
Steve Rubenstein, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, July 12, 2007

A Suisun man who lay helpless in thick vegetation for nearly two days after crashing his motorcycle and breaking his legs was spotted by a helicopter and rescued on Wednesday in rural Solano County, authorities said.

Frederick Hinds, 46, was spotted by his sister, Gail, a passenger in a helicopter hired by his employer to look for him.

Hinds apparently lost control of his motorcycle Monday night on a bend in the road on Highway 12 near Denverton Road, west of Rio Vista. He landed near a creek in tall tule reeds and was not visible to police and the California Highway Patrol, who had searched the area earlier, the Highway Patrol said.
