Yes vario owners the top case does come off. I did hit a depression in the road (Newfoundland, Canada) which the GS absorbed easily but the top case did not. I saw it bouncing down the road like a square beach ball shedding plastic all over. It didn't open but there is a lot of damage. BMW needs to fix that.........

I check the attachment every time I install the case. I cant force it off no matter how hard I try. It's now strapped down with a ratachet strap, scars and all.

In 2006 I believe they changed the specs for the topcase. Previous to that there were problems with the cases falling off and now when you look for the old number it is not available. I do not know what the differences are but it was supposed to fix the problem. You might check into it and see if BMW will buy you a new case. Just a thought. Kevin
