One bike stuck out and up at Summit Point last friday. A red R1200GS , expertly piloted by J. O. Sawyer. Easy to spot his helmet looming over the pack on the straight away and the gs passing quite a few riders it the turns...The GS is not just for the dirt... Nate Kern was impressed enough to sit up and take notice ( not much escapes his eye anway) .. Nate was a couple paddocks over from us and let me tell you that one would be hard pressed to find a more personable racer on the circuit today. His laid back and approchable nature is quite refreshing in todays world considering he is one of the fastest racers to the track these days.. he is apparently in his zone when his face shield flips down...
I think it is time we see more GS tires on the track... Maybe Nate could add one to his quiver..... Anyone else have thoughts on R1200GSs on the tarmac?

I am constantly impressed with my 1200 GS and I have had it on tracks on a few occasions. I had in on a quarter mile track and on Watkins Glen for a charity ride during the BMW Rally. I think that properly set up an experienced rider could do very well with the bike. It may be limited a bit by pure raw horspower against a pure sport bike, but I know mine is only limited by the abilities of it's rider. My two cents. Kevin

Hey Bloochdog, thx for the support at the track. The whole day was an absolute blast. Funny how personal people take it when you pass them on a what? A BMW dirtbike? Too much fun. Pilot roads did excellent and the brakes! Simply amazing. Never a hint of fade or drama, plenty in reserve for the knuckleheads who try to stuff in the corners. As said, it lacks a little in the pure power side but makes up for it in the next turn. Wasn't my first, won't be the last. As for meeting Nate, this guy just strolls over into my pit area and starts chatting about how nice it is to see another BMW on the track especially a GS. Turns out to be good 'ol Nate, what a treat to meet him and hang out with him all day. He did take the opportunity to watch me a little on the track and give support and a bit of advice on tire pressure and body position. Toward the end of the day, he actually insisted I take the 'A' bike onto the track and give it a shot as long as I didn't tell anyone. Man that thing is fast and the handling?! Ok, ok, so I didn't get to ride his bike, but I sure wanted to! Awesome Machines, Super nice rider and pit crew, Great Day. Thanks Guys.

As for the shirt, since you get them for free and I have to pay for them, I will just hang out with you and take yours next time. Jody

The GS is a great bike for the street. A good rider will stay with most guys at a street pace. The track is quite different. If you're taking one there for fun you'll have a blast. If you think you'll be going as fast as an R1200S...well you'll be disappointed. I've owned both.

lol, you guys are a trip! Again it was awesome and still is awesome you got your GS out there and I was watcing the exit of T9 and under the bridge inot T10, you were flat out spanking prurpose built bikes. Serieously, I enjoyed watching you effortlessly driving off the corner and hoding your line inot T10. I look forward to hanging out again and the new shirt will be yours at Loftus prices! lol
Hey good luck at sea and be safe buddy!
N8!
