As a matter of fact, I'm going to throw some knobbies on my 17-inch wheels after Xmas and ride the Mojave Trail with a couple of friends.

I could use your advice:

Since my bike has sport rims on it, I'm going to use some TKC 80 tires.

My front rim is 3.5 inches wide, so I'm going to put a rear tire on it. Do you know whether I should mount it backwards in order to get better tracktion under braking?

Here's another question: I have to ride 320 miles just to get to the section of desert I want to ride. Do you think the knobs will survive the freeway enough to serve in the desert?

Sorry, one final question. I'm also considering the Maxxis 6006.

But the largest size is designed for a rim that's 3 inches wide. I figure I can run it on the front rim, but not on the rear. Do you know if the Maxxis 6006 is better than the Conti TKC 80? Is it worth it run a Maxxis on the front and a Conti on the rear?

Well, there you have it. I'm riding into the face of perril this holiday. laughing Any suggestions are much appreciated. As for the sound byte, I'll try to remember precisely what I did, then I'll send you a PM.

See you at Ventura BMW or on a DSR.

Steven

I am in the process of putting tkc 80's on my 1200 gs.  They should handle the highway just fine.  You should be able to get 5 to 6k miles on contis on-road if they are not abused.  I do not know anything about the maxxis tires, but I have always been of the mind set to run matched tires on my bikes.  Not sure if it would really matter, but it may help predictibilty in rough terrain.  Good luck and let us what you decide and how it turns out.  Kevin

Talking of which....

I've been pretty lax putting Recap links up here. They are all accessible via the EarthRider website -- but here's a link to DSO 02 -- our Mojave Road dualsport ride. We had an incredible ride but, as you'll see, we didn't get to do ALL the riding originally planned. We'll be putting that one on again before the year is out!

The GF and I just hooked up with this group.  Just got our GS's as well.  Good group and well conducted rides.  Looking forward to many rides with the group and learning a lot about the bike and how to handle this beast off road.
