So I saw this kid with skate shoes or whatever you call them gliding down the store aisle.  The kind of shoes that have wheels in them and you can walk or roll.

I told my wife I'm going to get some of those, they really look cool and fun.

What does she say?  "If you get a pair, I give you no more than a week before I guarantee you'll be in some sort of a cast."

I stand by it.  If they make these for adults, I'm getting some.  Problem is, she might be right!

Stick with two wheels under your rear, instead of two wheels under your feet. At least you wear a helmet when you fly by the seat of your pants.

I say go for it.  It is harder for adults to learn new skills, but not imposible.  I love roller blading and I have also looked at those shoes with some longing.  I recomend some private practice before showing your wife.  When you look at the available gear for roller-protection it is overwhelming.  ATGATT can be daunting here.  I do recomend the wrist braces, though.  Very small and comfortable and can save easily broken wrists.  Depending on your experience, I may try some new wheels as well.  Good luck!  Kevin

Maybe they make them in adult sizes, but I couldn't find any.

yeah they make heely's for adults but trust me, having 3 daughters who all cruise around in them nonstop, it's a pretty steep learning curve.. they spent a good few days just going round and round the island in our kitchen getting the hang of it... I stick to rollerblades myself.

... and as one of my daughters discovered last fall, your wife may be right. she was going at a pretty good clip on a downhill stretch of sidewalk when her foot caught something and she broke her arm in two places.. visited the ER, had to be put under to have the bones set(that hurt to just watch) and 6 weeks of cast.. she still heely's but likes to wear wrist guards these days.. you might wanna look into getting some while you practice, too. biggrin

you'll also discover as we have that they're being banned in more and more places, out here anyways.

Why is it that the more I hear how dangerous it is, and that it is banned in places, the more I'm attracted to it??

Doug (SmokyRT), I think I'll start a line of Heely Motorcycle boots--you can park your scoot and keep on rolling!

I will see about getting a pair and report back from the ER.

Instead of dragging footpegs through a corner, we can just drag feet and save wear and tear on the pegs.  It might be embarassing at a stop sign with our feet down and not paying attention and start rolling, though.  Hmmm.

Hey Rob... go for it man.

I'll be heading out to buy a long board soon (skate).

Haven't skateboarded since i was 14... i think that's about the time they were invented.biggrin

I'll increase my insurance... wear a skate helmet... wrist guards and endure the mocking of

young testosterone where ever i go. So what... i'll be grinning m.a.o.... yet again.

Well my quest to buy Heelys has ended.  I tried half a dozen local retailers and more online retailers.  I even placed an order and it was canceled: "out of stock" in size 11.  I wrote Heelys twice and their Customer "NO" Service Dept. was not just unhelpful, but irritating and condescending.  I was essentially told to just keep trying every online retailer (about 50) until I found one that stocked my size or would order for me.

Anyone out there a Salesman?  Or a VP of a company?  It amazes me that a company would turn away a customer begging to part with his money.  A customer that might be positive word of mouth and result is other adults (aka big kids) to buy the product.  A customer who might post on a certain BLOG about how cool the shoes were.

Where I work, we have a saying.  "The best time to sell is when you have a customer".  Apparently, not Heelys.  I can understand why their stock has dropped from a 52 week high of near $39 to about $4.  They don't care about sales!

I just don't get it in this tough economy.  Can you imagine walking into a BMW dealer, with a checkbook in your hand, wanting to buy a bike, and walking out empty handed?

Yeah, I can. It would depend on how they answer my questions about rear drive failures.... sad

Just the other day I thought about this thread.  I was at a diner and a couple kids had wheels on their shoes, but they strapped on the outside of the shoe, resulting in a skateboard type wheel on either side of the heel of the shoe.  They could still walk around but then were gliding too.  Maybe something like this is an option.  I will keep an eye out.  Don't give up!  Kevin
