Has anyone modified a 1200rt windshield to reduce backdraft similar to the calsci shield? If so how did it work and do you have tips, measurements etc... Thanks.

Many people have used aftermarket screens on the RT, and I haven't heard anything bad. I've not seen the one you mention before, though. I have a Cee Bailey. You might want to consider upgrading the weak brackets (I keep hearing more and more of failures). I can lead you to this old post, might be of some interest to you: http://www.bmwxplor.com/forums/topic/show/2176#new Robo

Thanks. Yes I've heard the brackets are poor. The calsci shield has an opening at the middle base to eliminate airflow back pressure.

Yeah, I saw that. I didn't read too much on their website since I already have a new shield. Where does that air go? I wonder if it would hit you. The screen looks about the same size as stock and that was just too small for me. The stock shield just didn't divert enough air over my head at 6'1". Where are you standing in the avatar picture? Looks nice.

The hole eliminates the low pressure vacum and cuts drag and makes it quieter as I understand it. Sounds about right. The photo is up in Glacier National park, highway to the sun.

Interesting. If you get one, definitely report back. I'd be interested mostly in its ability to block the wind compared to the stock windshield. The stock was not good for me.

I believe that the slot at the base of the windshield, by promoting some airflow along the inside face of the shield, reduces the "stalling effect" of the shield as an airfoil, enhances laminar flow off the trailing edge of the shield, and reduces the amplitude of the "flutter zone" in the boundary layer between the laminar flow of the apparently moving air that been pushed aside by the shield and the air that appears to be trapped in the pocket behind the shield and fairing. I'm just saying . . . You know . . . C

Yes it works! I bought one two months ago and have been very pleased. I started off by installing a vent in the factory shield that I bought from Roborider, but I cut the hole too big and messed it up. After that I bought the Cal-Sci medium shield and it works. No more pain in my shoulder. Best accessory I've bought yet!

Do you have pictures of the Cal-Sci installed? Charlie's discussion of laminar flow piqued my interest. I'm using the stock windshield. And I usually keep it lowered all the way down. I don't really think about the windshield except when its raining. But I haven't logged any days of 1000 highway-miles either. I'd be curious to know how important the windshield is to other riders. It seems many people like to modify their windshields, so I assume they are held in high esteem, but I don't really get it.

When I'm riding the highway, I like a calm quiet zone and I raise my windshield to achieve that. Rarely, with the larger windshield, do I need more than about half way. In the twisties, I keep it all the way down. The speeds, although they SEEM fast, are usually 20-50, up down etc. At that speed, I'm more concerned with the windshield being down so I don't have to look through it. Jack, at 6-4, you probably would need a plexiglass sail! That's 3 inches taller than I am and the stock shield was pretty useless to me. Robo

Guy's, I am 5 10 1/2 and I am too tall even with the sheild up.
I wanted to get the 2 inch shorter seat and try that as well with the stock windshield.
Robo, Your brackets or arms have not broke yet? How much riding do you do with the sheild up?
