Bringing or Buying a bike in Thailand

I just took a new position in my company and it is going to have me living as an expat for 3 years in either Thailand or Malaysia.

I am trying to figure out the options:

1. Sell the GS
2. Store the GS
3. Ship the GS over there

Does anyone know what the cost is to have the bike imported to Thailand (the most likely destination)? I get enough space in my shipping container to bring it over, but I don't know if it is going to be too expensive to bring it with if Thai Customs applies some sort of import tax to bring it into the country.

Also, how much does a R1200GS standard (with ABS) cost in Thailand new?

I see some stuff online, but maybe it is better to get a 450 four stroke to bounce around the country on.

Wow, great questions. I don't have any answers, but storing the bike for 3 years seems like the least desirable choice.

You might be able to get around an import tax if you have a Carnet stating you won't sell the bike/equipment in Thailand.

You might try posting a similar question on the Adventure Rider web site -- lots of world travelers there.

Personally, I'd sell the GS here and buy a local bike. BWTFDIK? Are there BMW dealers in Thailand?

Please let us know what your solution will be.

Sell the GS.  When you get over there figure out whether you'll have time for riding, and what sort of roads and gas are available.  Buy from a local option so that you have a shot at getting service with minimal aggravation.  When you are coming back in 3 years, sell the second bike and treat yourself to the latest and greatest new GS available in North America.
