Last winter Steve and i are where trying to figure out where we could take our GSA's for a long weekend ride in the Dirt. We decided the Trans Labrador Highway Tag Goose Bay and head home. Fast forward to the beginning of July I see Steve at Max BMW and he asks me when we are going to Labrador. I told him that I had the week of July 14th off from work so any time that week would be good for me. Unfortunately Steve could not go. Lisa ( water Goddess) said I could go but I had to take her. The next day I get a call from another 2 up GSA rider, when I told him where I was going he immediately asked if he could tag along. We decide to meet at my house Friday in Eastern NY and head up through VT to Quebec for day 1

Last minute GPS checks, waypoints, clear trip data, etc

Leaving from my house Sat Morning

A dirt road heading through VT, loosening up for what is to come

The USA/Canada border crossing in Richford VT

Our campsite about 40 miles east of Quebec City

The Water Goddess enjoying the petting Zoo at the campground

 Packing up in the rain

The free ferry on Quebec 138 half way between Quebec City and Baie- Comeau

Still Raining very hard, The 4 of us on the ferry

Never got this mans name but he was the ambulance driver in front of us and had to get out and see were we are going. He just moved to the area and has a Trans Alp. Told me that there are logging roads to bypass all the pavement between Quebec city and 389. Should have got his name and number.

Our first taste of Canadian dirt rd. A logging Rd bypassing Baie-Comeau still in the pouring rain. The other couple decided to call it  a day and got a hotel.

Quebec Highway 389 just north of Manic 2 dam Still pouringsmug

You know that you are heading out into the woods when there are emergency phones every 50 miles or so

This is just the beginning of the solitude and awsome scenery

ucky Our Lucky day!!! Last room, at company hotel just before the Manic 5 dam. End of day 2 time to dry out the camping gear. This will be the only hotel of our 7 day 6 night trip. We unfortunetly missed the last tour of the Manic 5 dam of the day. The water Goddess had her heart set on the tour so I agreed that we would wait for the 9:30 am tour tomorrow.

First view of the Manic 5 dam, the largest Arch and Buttress dam in the world. I had about 3 hrs to waste before the tour so we decided to ride around and Xplore the area

I have no Idea what the sign says, but it is at the gate on top of the dam.

I wonder where this road goes?????

Nice lake with a Residant Loon

Several miles up the road found this airport. There was about 6 hikers packing camping gear and Kayaks to be flown into the back country.

Riding around the logging roads wasting time

 More dirt and scenery

One of the many fast flowing rivers yet to be seen on our ride

The beginning of our tour of the Manic 5 dam. These tour guides where very accomadating of us no French speakin tourist, She gave us our own explanation of how the dam was built while all the French speaking tourists went to the autotoriam, After she was done she gave us a handout in english so we could follow along and understand what the tourguide was pointing at. Highly reccomend this tour 5 star.

The Water Goddess excited on the bus to the inside of the dam

Looking up under the largest arch before we go into the dam. For security reasons no pictures allowed inside the dam.

A view from the top center of the dam. The bridge is the one we cross heading north on 389

The Water Goddess and our tour guide

Both of us

The beginning of dirt. Next stop 107K at the outfitter for gas.

I wonder where this guy on the 1150RT is goingd_oh

Impressiveapplause, Met Dave from Michigan heading to Goose Bay, our first of many meetings with Dave over the next 3 days.

That is enough for tonight, I will continue with more later

Thanks Shawn, if you and the wife want to tag along for a 2 up adventure you are always welcome. It is always nice to have some one else to talk to. This was a practice run for James Bay/North rd and the grand tiaga hwy or Copper Canyon in Mexico next year.

Now for more of the pix from the tripapplause

My Thoughts as we hit the loose P-Stone " I cant let this guy on the Rt school me Man he is hauling a&^"

Look at those dark clouds I think we may hit some rain, we are averaging 55mph I wonder if we will maintain in the rain

Lisa oops the "Water Goddess" takes a picture of herself

 Notice the Rough Road Sign

 Clouds are really getting dark

107 KM north of Manic 5 the next sign of civilization. The outfitter Gas/Food, and what ever I heard they even have rooms. We payed $12.00 for 2 AA batteries for Lisa's camera. No Complaints our fault for not being prepared. Very nice lady. We used the very clean restrooms to throw on some extra layers for the rain ride. Dave on the RT caught up to us and we formally met

 The front of the store

If something happens you only have 10Km to call for help

 Another river

Holy Crap Pavement

The pavement is actually at the Ghost Town of Gagnon, this was a mining town and when the mine closed down they packed up all the houses and moved them. You can see the topps of the campers next to the river. Better timing I should have camped here. Maybe next time.

The Mounty Barracks at the edge of Gagnon, and another SOS Phone

 Left turn dummy

Pay attention to silly signs in the middle of nowhere. This was the begiining of the really loose gravel, RR Tracks as we approached the Write MTN mines. It lasted a few miles

The 1st of 9 RR crossings

Skinny road, loose gravel beutiful scenery on the pegs avg speed 45mph

This road is sooo cool

Had to bang a U turn so Lisa could et a picture of the Train Passing by

Another one lane bridge, Like we really need a stop sign

Getting close to the Wright Mtn Mine

 Impressive

The Last time we saw Kevin and Mandy, they decided to head back once they reached Labrador City

 Another shot of the mine

Done with Quebec now we have Labradordancing

The kid at the Gas station offered to take our picture. The locals are sooo nice. We are not in NY any moreapplause from here on we met some of the nicest people,

Asked the Kis at the gas Sation where we could get some batteries, he said Wal-Mart next door. Not exactly what I had planned but got 16 batteries for $4.00 better than $12 for 2 so I had to do it. It was only 4pm so we decided to keep going

Our next stop Churchill Falls We are finally on the Trans Labrador Highwaydancing

 Very diverse scenery

 See what I mean

 and more

This must mean construction

A lot of riders complain about construction but it really is not that bad

This guy stopped us just so we could get a picture of him, Notice the smile and the T shirt

 Nice smooth RD

Lots of construction equipment the frst 20 miles

 And  scenery

 Whats this Traffic?? Unacceptable

 Traffic Jam

Now its time to suck my dustlaughing

 The Rivers are sooooo awsume

White out dust, not for long

Clear air, the Water Goddess attempting to bust me showing the gPS as we clear the truck. It is best to get past them so you have clean air.

Open Road

we must be getting close to Churchhill Falls a Camp on the side of the road

 Nice

 Need i say More

This was the first of 4 Osprey nests, as we went by they ;ooked over the top of the nest. We never did get a picture of one

Whats left of the Churchill River after it was diverted for the dam

The other side of the road, Can you imagine what this River was like before the diversionsad

Time to pull of and get ome gas and food for the night

Gas, conveniant and liquor store, we asked the kid pumping gas where a good place to camp would be, he said just set your tent up at the church on the lawn or if yuo dont mind sand just go down the dirt road behind the church and camp at the town beachd_oh Being from NY i can only picture myself getting arrested, so we ask the lady inside and she tells us the same thing so we get a bottle of Wine and set off for the church

This is the school, grocery store, Hotel, restourant

Our Hotel and Kitchen

Met Elmer the Deaf ADV Rider doing the Loop starting in NC what a very Genuine individual. wish we had more time to get to know him, Elmer was heading west and was riding a GS1200.

Our Private Beach, Time to open the bottle of Wine and relax.

Sun in your eyes clean fresh air no better way to start your day

Just another lake it is so clean

The puddles in the road are from the dew, no rain the night before

Water Goddess trying to focus on the signs but i feel rested and we have picked up the pace. No dust and I am comfortable with the bike dancing under us.

Nice shadow picture of us dirt dancing

The next few pix are just of the scenery enjoydrooling

Soft Pea Gravel, Not bad at all.

Awesome pics! Truely amazing scenery. Do you both stand on the pegs at the same time on the gravel roads? I noticed in your shadow pic "The Water Goddess" appears to be sitting. I haven't ridden 2-up off the pavement, but I've heard that some people put a strap for the pillion to hold onto, and others actually put thier hands on the rider's shoulders!!! The thought of her "input" on my shoulders don't sound good to me except when I let her stand while I'm sitting, riding pavement in a sedate manner. I don't have a passenger often and I'm wondering what to do, short of putting her on her own bike, to let her move around on long dirt road triops

Lisa alway sits, I warn her of up coming large bumps so she can brace and take the weight off her back (we use an Autocom). When we are in slow speed technical riding she finds that holding onto the handles on the side of the GSA works the best and weights the pegs to keep the center of gravity down. She never holds onto me because I need to be able to move around on the bike. Most the time she sits quietly and enjoys.
