looking at a trip to the south west during Dec / Jan. Part of the trip will be from Las Vegas to Flagstaff AZ in early Jan. Not being from the US I have no idea if the I40 is generally passable at that time of year or whether it is covered in ice. Any help appreciated.

They keep highway 40 open pretty much all year. But bring your best snow riding skills for anything off the interstate. The snow in the Flagstaff area in Jan is usually about knee-deep

You're going to be up around 7,000 ft in the Flagstaff area, lot's of snow in January

Hey Dave,

As long as we're changing your route and destinations around silly you might want to consider Death Valley. Here's a good 450 miles ending at Newcomb's Ranch for supper.

The route I linked has some dirt road sections that will be challenging on your LT, but it would be very easy to stick to the pavement. I've been on most of those roads during winter, but I can't vouch for all of them being open. A little research should clear things up.

I'd be happy to meet up with you on this side of Death Valley.

Steven
