Squeaky front brake

I have 06 K1200R that i bought new.  Almost from the start my front brake really squeals when I coming to a stop.  It really sounds like a big ole grain truck coming to a stop.  I took it back to the dealer and complained and they put some kind of lubricant on it and the noise went away for about 200 miles.  I wrote about this maybe a year ago and the consensus was that the noise would go away when i got more miles on the bike.  Well I turned over 11,000 and the front brake still talks to me when stopping.  I mean heads turn when I pull up. Even though I have plenty of OEM pad left I am ready to go to an aftermarket pad to try and get rid of the noise.  Any suggestion on what to buy?

Same thing happens with the rear brake on the KTM. Squeeeeeaal. Plenty of pad left. I think the rear rotor may have a little warp to it. I was thinking of switching out the rotor. Let me know if the pad switch works; it would be cheaper to try that first.

No suggestions on what to buy, but my 06 K1200R (with 8000 miles) has the same squeal when braking with the front brake.  It's gotten me in the good habit of using the back brake at slow speeds.  But, let us know if you find something that works...

Generally speaking, EBC aftermarket pads and perhaps a new pad alignment spring should remove the squeal.  That's a relatively cheap fix if you do the work yourself.  I don't know if your bike has a pad alignment spring, though.

I just bought some Dunlap brake pads, so I'm going to try them and see if they get rid of the squealing.  Let you know, I'm going on vacation so I will not be able to try them for a couple of weeks yet.

Well I got around to changing the front pads last night, by the way they are very easy to change.  10 minutes tops per set.  So far NO squeaking.  The pads I bought were Dunlaps and they were half price of OEM brake pads.  Around 45$ per set, BMW quoted me a price of $90.  I will give them a go and see if they hold up and stay quiet.  I have to admit it was a pure joy to pull up to a stop sign and not announce to the world that I'm stopping.

Was there a pad retaining spring, or are those pads just floating?

They were floaters.

I've been having the same problem with my bike.  How are your new pads holding up?

I have about 2,000 miles on the new pads.  So far I haven't heard a thing from the brakes.  I would have to say I don't have a complaint about them.  It was a easy fix.

Has anyone else experienced this brake squealing with any other bike?

I have an 05 R12RT.  The pads began to squeal around 3 or 4k miles from new.  The service manager told me to clean the rotor.  I cleaned it with brake cleaner and a rag, and I was the rotor when I wash the bike.  It quit squealing.  The noise wasn't super loud, but loud enough to be annoying and somewhat embarrassing at a stoplight.  It's quiet now.  I don't know if it was the cleaning so much as maybe the pads just wore in better?  Not sure, but she's ok now and still on original pads at 32k miles.

PS: it was just the front brake.

Noisy front brakes are cured by CAREFULLY applying grease to the back side of the pads. My OE fronts (39,000 miles) tend to squeal from time to time. Remove the pads, clean the calipers with brake cleaner and apply a light smear of any general purpose grease (I used a moly fortified lithium grease) to the rear side of the pad. Also, roughing the pad friction material with sandpaper helps.

BRAKES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY SYSTEM ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE. DO NOT WORK ON YOUR BRAKES UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND THE PRINCIPLES OF BRAKE OPERATION AND POSSESS ADEQUATE SKILLS TO WORK ON THE BRAKE SYSTEM. DO NOT GET ANY GREASE ON THE PAD FRICTION SURFACES OR THE ROTORS OTHERWISE THE FRONT BRAKES MAY BE RENDERED INOPERABLE CAUSING INJURY OR DEATH.
