US Hwy 50 or I-80?????

In two weeks I am riding from the L.A. area to Salt Lake City via Hwy 395. In my planning, I am trying to decide whether I should take US 50 or I-80 east to the I-15. The mileage from my house to Salt Lake City via either route will be 1000 mi. (plus or minus 50 depending which way). I have been on the 80 before but have never been on the 50 east of Carson City. Looking at the map it appears that the 50 is a pretty major route and would have plenty of fuel/food stops. Are there any opinions out there as to which would be better, more scenic etc...? Oh, and I should mention that I am doing it non-stop. I am prepared for the heat. My Evapodanna should arrive today. And I am planning on wearing my Camel Bak along with taking frequent brakes.

Thanks for the input!

based on a quick look at the map, I'd take 50.  However, given that you are going 1000 miles in a day, you might just want to stay on the super-slab.

While I've not personally been on it, I've been told that 50 is a nice ride.
It goes over mountains and through valleys.
Looks pretty good if you follow it east from Lake Tahoe: http://tinyurl.com/6zvlqx

1,000 miles will be a long day.

Take pictures and let us know how it goes. peace

After doing a little more research, I think it might be worth staying the night in Carson City before heading across in order to enjoy the scenery and enjoy it while I'm fresh rather than at the end of a 15 to 17 hour day.

Here's another vote for 50. If you're feeling really adventurous and have plenty of time, you might want to try Hwy 49. It's a narrow, twisty two-lane road through the hills and canyons.

Another Vote for 50. We came across 50 after dropping down to Ely from Twin Falls and loved the ride. Not much traffic and lot's of open space to see.

Definately Hwy 50.  I rode it last year to Bonneville, desolate but enough services along the way for food, gas etc.  You will find the roads great, almost no traffic and I don't think I saw a single cop. Plenty of room to open it up and test the limits of your machine.biggrin

Returned safely from the trip! Took the 50 and you guys were all correct. It was a nice ride. The most amazing thing however was that the temp. never got warmer than 88!! Afetr all was said and done, 1935 safe and hassle free miles! The US89 south out of South Fork Utah is a road I highly recommend!
