I swore I up and down I would NEVER work on a bike again, I lied....blushing
The picture below shows the cables for my GPS unit. The cables came without instructions and before I make a 20 minute job into a weekend ordeal to be followed by a trip to the dealer. I need a little reassurance that I am doing the right thing.
Cables : Red / Black / Ground / Power outlet for the unit..... wire with gold circle
Easy: Attached red to red on the battery / black to black in the battery....
Should I attacked some kind of prongs to the cables before I do the connections?
Where is the best place to ground the unit.....
Any ideas on what the item with the gold circle isconfused
Thanks,

Hey E. the power connection plug looks identical to the one I have on my BMW Navigator III. Therefore, I conclude that he "golden circle" thingy is a second plug for the cradle of your GPS (should have the same cable length as the power connection plug). You do have a cradle, where the GPS pops in, right?

Thomas,

It is basically the same unit. I have the mount which will hold the cradle on a cradle:

Are my instructions correct????

Cradle:

I was trying to route the electrical wires BEFORE The unit arrived. The Cable you are talking about should be included in the box, If not I will PM you for ideas....

Thanks

Emiliano, your cradle is a little different than mine. My cradle is actually powered for operation of some buttons.

I would probably wait with cable routing until you have the unit in hand and decide on final location. In my experience, it is always helpful to actually try out how the unit will sit in the location you think is best. Did you consider movement of handle bar, weight of unit (i.e. vibration), operation while riding etc. Once you're sure where the unit will end up, then I would start routing cables.

I believe, you'll connect directly to the battery. I'd say route the cable along an existion cable strand, as determined by the bikes manufacturer. This way you will avoid most pinch points, high temp areas etc. Try to place the gound connection on the frame itself (or battery), instead of tripple clamp.

The "golden ring" thingy looks like it is an audio plug...(?) Your cradle doesn't look like it has any function others than holding the GPS.

"E",

I ran all my electrical thru a fuse block [centech], so as not to have a birds nest of wires coming off the battery, but as long as that is the only other bike powered item you'll ever have you'll be alright.

S ome like to find a hot wire off the bike so it goes dead when you turn the key off, but that gets harder, other wise you'll have to remember to turn the GPS off when you shut the bike off .

But with the Centech you have a convenient place that has fuses to hook anything else in the future that you would need power for: Extra Power Outlets, Heated Gear, Radios, Etc., Etc. !

Good luck "Running Bird"

That of course would be the best solution, if you feel up to installing the centec or similar unit.
