Here are a few photos from our ride to Crater Lake.  This full set is available on Flickr:

Memorable moments from this trip included:

- Big Creek Inn in Fish Camp CA.  John and Pamela, the owners, were great people.  John races an R6 on the weekends.  Lots of motorcycle talk.  John played video for us of one of his races.

- The views from Glacier Point Yosemite were breathtaking.

- The traffic in Yosemite was terrible.

- On the way from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe my bike broke down in Nevada.  For the second time in 3 months I got to ride in a wrecker with my bike loaded onto the back.

- Missed a non-refundable reservation in Lake Tahoe.  Never made it to Tahoe.

- Me, my brother, all of my brother’s gear, and all of my gear loaded onto my brothers rented Harley riding down the freeway trying to find a motel at 11:30 pm.  Thought I was going to die.

- A&S BMW in Roseville CA is the best.  The salesmen at A&S took it upon themselves to fix my bike.  Their service department was closed (this was a Monday) so they brought my bike in and fixed it.  Turned out to be a bad battery.  Strange though as the lights still came on and dash lit up but would not start.

- Crater Lake is just unbelievable.  No pictures do it justice.

- Riding the Avenue of the Giants.  Zipping down this twisty road and the distinct smell of these massive redwoods.

- The coast of California was foggy and freezing.  Temp hovered in the mid 50’s.  Ran a heated vest and grips most of the way.

Kristine, my wife, flew to meet us in San Francisco where we met up with some other friends.  We all went for Dim Sum.  Awesome.

Big Sur.  This area always gives me goose bumps.

Spending a week riding with my brother.  We hadn’t spent this much time together since we were kids.  It was a real treat.

Nice photos and it sounds like a super ride! (sans the wrecker ride).  I ordered some parts online from A&S and they were good to deal with there, as well.

Awesome trip! I keep meaning to ride somewhere really far but often ride the same area in your pics! There is so much good stuff here on the left coast it makes it hard to escape!

And a week riding with your brother! I can't even dream that big.

Wow, great trip report, Mike. And I haven't even checked the flickr link yet. Going there now. Thanks for sharing!

Steven

PS: good to know about A&S. Very cool that they got you back on the road.

Great report, and just awesome pictures.  Thanks for taking us along, man.

Yeah, for some reason beemers are hyper-sensitive to the resting voltage in the battery.  The electronics just close their eyes and go to sleep.

But of course dealing with a broken bike on the side of the road is just so cool and old school.

Holy crap I've got to get out there and see that crater.   Are there touristy places around there selling Crater Lake Ash Trays?  I love that stuff.

Thanks all.  There were a few tourist places headed into the park but not as many as I thought there'd be.  Prospect OR looks like an interest place to stay.

I really have to hand it to A&S.  Aside from the salesguys fixing the bike, when I got there to pick it up they had washed it, topped off the oil, and put air in the tires.  Then they gave me a cool pocket knife with their dealer name on it and gave my bro a DVD.  They brought us in for drinks and showed us around their place - they have quite a few vintage BMWs on display.  It's places like that that keep you coming back.

There's a gift shop at the Crater Lake Lodge http://www.craterlakelodges.com/

It costs about $175-250 to stay there. Highway 62 south (or west) towards Medford has some fun sections to ride, but heavy traffic on weekends. and to the north highway 138, the "North Umpqua Highway" is scenic with twistie bits and a great hike to Umpqua hot springs. 138 is my home away from home, and I hear it calling me.
