F650 specs

I was just checking out the specs of the new F650 and apparently this bike has a 798cc engine.  Why don't they just call it an F800?laughing

Hmmm.... I'm thinking that they alredy have a couple of those.

I'm also thinking that they don't want to pull sales away from the up

margin... ah... make that market... 800 GS. biggrin

I've heard that the new 650 is a sleeved-down version of the 800.
Maybe the specs you saw hadn't been updated.

The "new" F650GS does indeed use the same or similar 800 motor as the F800GS, along with the F800S and ST. What I'm not certain of is ...well, it's a few things.

 

  1. What exactly they did (sleeve the cylinders?) to make a 650 out of an 800
  2. Why they sullied the good F650GS name with this new twin
  3. Why, when they realized (too late, perhaps?) their mistake of killing off the "old" 650GS, have they now decided to bring it back and call it a G650GS
As time goes by I'm sure I'll learn more and more details. For now, it sure appears as though BMW misjudged and are trying to come up with a solution. Trouble is, was there really a problem to begin with?

Nope! It's 798cc, just like the F800. But it's tuned different so it only produces 71 HP instead of 85. It also only has a single disc front brake and 19 inch front wheel instead of dual discs on a 21" wheel. There are quite a few differences but the displacement is the same. I'm surprised they didn't just designate the "650" as an F798 to diferintiate it from the 800

Nothing to do with specs...but a black engine, black frame and black swingarm...I can't handle the contrast.

One thing is for sure. I'll never buy one until they come out with a silver colored engine. Black! Damn impractical!!!!

I special ordered my R1150 GS Adventure with silver colored engine and transmission cases. They came black on that model in Canada. In Europe they came silver with black being an option.

Wow, very interesting. I wonder if the motor has stonking torque, or maybe it gets 80 miles to the gallon. Very interesting.

I was just being facetous.  I assumed that they sleeved down or shortened the stroke on the 798cc mill and I was curious which it was.  I further assumed it was a misprint on the online specs.  That's just plain goofy to call a 798cc bike a 650.

Turns out it's different cams and a re-programmed ECU.

i was told by the dealer that it was called a 650 because of euro- lic. at 71 hp it falls under 650 lic.?

Sounds about right. Consensus among dealership folks I have spoken with is that the new F650GS was likely going to be a Europe-only bike until people here freaked out about the cancellation of the old model and asked (begged) for this one. Having a smaller capacity bike (or at least one that is named as smaller capacity) makes some sense in the context of tiered licensing. Here in the U.S., it just confuses customers.

whats the idea of a dual sport having a close ratio box? they could keep 6th where it is and have a 1st that would do less than 10 mph! are you listening bmw? wide ratio box would be more usefull especially with such a torkey motor! put in a 1st gear that would allow about 5 mph at say 1800 rpm and space the rest accordingly!

I have no success in finding out how low the "low model" are compared to the standard 32.2 inch height. The specs point to a lowering kit that's available for $175.00. How much does that kit lower the standard height ?

I currently own a 2007 F650GS with the factory low frame and low seat. I had to have it furthe lowered using a one inch koubalink to bring it down to a level where the balls of my feet are touching the ground.

Would like to know if the new twin model could be lowered to 29 inches using a combination of low frame, lowering kit, low seat and koubalink ?
