can anyone tell me why my 2007 r1200 gs is smoking when I start it? It seems to be a white smoke that last for 5 seconds or so and clears up. I frist noticed at 2,000 miles or so. And it has done this 10 times or so that I've noticed. I've tried differnt oils,mid-grade (the one BMW says to use) and high test gas and it still smokes. Now it has 14 k miles. I was told by my dealer to use the center stand not the side stand. Should oil slide by those rings while on the side stand.  Thanks Alvin

Is the smoke white/white or bluish white?

Are you sure its smoke and not water vapor?

I only use the center stand on the boxers for this very reason. Yes, oil can slide past the rings if its allowed to rest on the side stand for a long time... they're not a fluid-tight seal.  Gravity works!

thanks for your reply. It is white....and it only does this after sitting an hour or so.like leaving a restaurant for example. One time after sitting in a hot parking lot in the afternoon sun 2 weeks ago for about 3 hrs it smoked alot. I just don't get it. thank you thank you Alvin

When the bike is on the sidestand some oil drains down in to the left side of the engine and gets burned up on startup.  That is why it only lasts a short amount of time.  Mine does it too, as well as most of the boxers unless regularly put on center stands.

Although not a boxer, My '88 K100 would do the same thing, for the same reasons as mentioned. It seemed to do it noticably more when parked next to Harleys-  Go figure.

I recently got a "Check Oil" message while on a ride, and found that my oil level was slightly low (less than a cup).  My '07 GS 1200 has about 6k miles on the odometer, and I was surprised, since I had a little over a thousand miles since my last oil change.  I had expected the oil level would remain fairly constant, but after reading this thread, I realized my bike often spends the day parked on its side kick stand at work.  Although I didn't pay it much attention, from time to time, I noticed the white smoke you guys are talking about.  Since oil slides past the rings when parked in that position, I guess that might explain the slight oil consumption that triggered my warning message.  Thanks for the thread.
