Well, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread regarding the preparations for our little foray into the desert. We have had about a week to get used to the new shoes, and I  have been talking to several folks about what to expect.

We recieved a brief breifing from BMW... It gave us a little teaser insight into where we were headed, and the dates to prepare for. Some things we have to submit to them are our bloodtype, and passport numbers.  I'm getting mine typed on Monday. The schedule is to arrive in Milan on the 14th Oct. The 15th will see us on a Ferry to Tunis (it looks like Tunis from the map) and the challenges begin on the 16th.
We depart Tunisia on the 23rd, and leave Milan on the 25th.

This means that from right now, we have ... 37 days to departure.

We will be camping, primarily. There will be at least one challenge a day.  So what I'm picturing is a Big GS ride, with some of the things we might encounter normally on a ride like this turned into olympic events.

Within a few days we will be quite far south in the country, and into the Sahara. Sahara actually means "desert" in Arabic, I think, so the Sahara Desert is actually the Desert Desert.

A lot of the whole ride will be in sandy conditions.   :-/

Sand. Why did it have to be Sand?   I am sure I will grow to love it with all my heart.

BMW also provided in the brief some wonderful Dept of Tourism photos of Tatooine, the desert planet.  :-)

BMW is graciously supplying a suit, but we will supply our own helmets, boots, and the rest. I'm going to try to figure out how to incorporate a Leatt brace and some kind of chest protection... I'm not sure how to do that- what I've been doing doesnt really work for me. I need new boots, and a new helmet anyway, so this is as good an excuse as its going to get. I'm kinda wanting to get an Arai XD stormtrooper/alien looking helmet with the flip up visor. And I hear the SIDI's are good boots, not much break in time, which is going to be important.

The Germans and Japanese teams have had a lot more time to think about this stuff than us, but we have more time than the Italians and Spanish... I cant wait to meet these guys. Smity, I followed your links- they seem to merely be advertisements for the gig, being that those two teams havent been chosen yet.

I'm

I know how to say Hello and goodbye, please and thank you in all of my fellow's languages, (German, Italian, Spanish) with french actually being my strong language.  Strong being a very relative word, in this case. Actually now thatI mention it, I know zero japanese. I'm going to have to lean a little.

Over in the other GS trophy thread I posted a webpage full of health advisories for travellers going to Tunisia. Often, I find they are quite a bit overstated, but its good to have in mind, It does however, say the very activity we'll be participating in is responsible for the greatest number of deaths in the country. Thats nice.   I'll keep that in the very back of my mind.

Some people like Tom Fitzgerald, have been very generously forthcoming with info about similar types of experiences and events and its been quite enlightening.. I hope everyone can feel free to give us any intel at all... I'm soaking it up like a sponge.

training wise- Today, I gave it 7 miles of the Shawangunks Finest trails on a mountain bike in the pouring rain. Followed by some sprints on the old railroad bed, and a lap up to the top of Mountain Rd and back, so I could make sure I cracked 10 miles. I got a bunch of time in yesterday chasing a friend on his WR250... Ran around and pushed the PD hard for about 4 hours, in the back woods and at a local gravel quarry. Was going to head over to the sandpitswhen I thought I lost my phone, so bailed early. False alarm, but I need to spend a lot of time over at the sand pits. I'm so happy to be back on the airhead, I tell you. I took pics, but forgot the camera cord at work. Tomorrow morning I'll going to tow the kid around in the trailer on the mountain bike all morning.  She's like a 40 pound medicine ball :lol

Jim- I'm going to take a day and come up to your place this weekend or next. The 14th I'm entering the PD in a motocross race over at Claverack. They have a dualsport class, if at least 6 of us show up. Ever seen 10 1150's on a motocross course? Its like watching a parade of elephants in tutu's :-D

I cant think of anything else right now.

Good Info Jason keep it coming, I have been doing arobics every day, took a few days off from the mountain bike ( started feeling a little tendonitis in the elbow). Getting ready to get back on it and go for a 15 mile ride before the wife wakes up.( too late she woke up)

Sand will definately be differant than what we are used to. Since I gave my Indianapolis Moto GP tickets to my kid for next weekend I am thinking that I will go to the Pine Barons to spend a day or two in the sand. The motocross sounds like fun but but in reality you will only get about 30 minutes of riding the entire day so I am going to pass on that.

As far as gear goes, I took advantage of the rain day and went shopping yesterday, Got a spare set of goggles, 2 sets of quick straps, another set of GS Gloves, and some new riding socks and Riding under garments. Need a new gear bag, Camelback and knee pads that I will be ordering today.

I too am trying to find out what to wear for upper body protection. I checked out the new Rallye 2 suit yesterday and they do have some form of elbow and shoulder pads. My old Dianese compression suit is hot and worn out so it needs replacement. Let me know what you come up with.

We definately have a lot to do in the next 30 plus days as far as conditioning and planning. It is amazing that the gear that we have been wearing for years for 1 day rides will not work for 8 days in the desert. Kinda differant than we are used to in the Northeast.

Yeah, I think you may be right. I love the PD on the motocross thing, but the saddle time is pretty limited.

 Here's something like a low-prifile chest protector i found:

This one might be better:

And I was wondering if BMW was going to put all the hip padding in the pants. I could bring the pads I got from my suit, but there is this, as well- I think it adds some Coccyx protection.

I also know hwat you mean about the tendonitis... :-o

I wrote to Charlie Rauseo at www.rallymanagementservices.com asking for any possible advice he was willing to give. THey run a 3-day Rally training  course out in the West that I would love to take, although we dont have time before we take off on this thing. Would be a good/fun thing to take anyway.

If either of you want a guided tour of the NJ pine barrons, let me know.  Sundays are my most convenient day to ride the pines but I could probably swing another day or two for a good cause!  PM me if you are interested.  I could also hook you up with some GPS routes if you want to try it on your own.  The PB300 is Oct 11 and 12 but that is probably too close to tunisia.

Good luck guys and let me know if I can help!

Yeah, Shawn- I do... It would be a travesty if I didnt make it down there before this thing for some practice. I'd love to get down there with Jim. Will PM you with details, if I have any. :-)  I think its 3-4 hours from where I am, and closer to 5ish from Jim. Sundays would work great, just need to figure out the logistics of kid coverage, and getting there Saturday night- that sort of thing. Thanks for the offer.

I appreciate the offer Shaun, for a guide to the Pine Barons. I was talking to Jason earlier about trying to get down there this weekend. I was also told by Rob23 that he could show us around with enough notice, and that a good campsite was the Bass River State Forest. If you are available this Sunday for a ride i will make my resorvations at the campground and head down Saturday.

Today Lisa (AKA Watergoddess) made my appointments with the public health nurse to update my immunizations. What a pain in the a*&. I am glad she did it for mesmile

Well time to get out and get some exercise.

This weekend should be good for me.  We may be in for a bit of rain over the weekend but it is too early to have an accurate forcast.  Reservations at the campground this time of year should not be a problem, you would probably be the only one there!

Rob23 would know better what campground to stay at, take his advise on that.  Unfortunitely his shoulder injury will hamper his ability to show you around much.  I could round up a few other big bikes to join the fun!

We can work out the details later in the week.

I'd just like to point out that if you think making the appointments was a pain in the rear, wait until the it's time for the shots! laughing

Well, dammit all I wont be able to hang with you guys this weekend. :-(

Obligations are piling up here...

But I will sing loudly when I can! There is a small sand pit not far from here I can use to get myself pretty tired in... and you guys still have an open invite to help me thrash the back woods.

Till then, I am scheduled to get up to Max's this weekend and test fit a Rally suit, and get myself a helmet. I think I'm going with the Arai XD, unless something else really turns me on. I got a pair of Sidi Crossfires, we'll see how that works out, they say they are good boots. I hope so.

Today I went to the Travel Doc and he suggested I get a few shots... I got a Hep A and B, Typhoid, and a Polio vaccination. Probability is pretty low, but the suck factor is huge if I am so lucky as to get one of these little bugs.  I wonder if the doctor who is traveling with us will have diarreha antibiotics with him. Sounds like something he should travel with.

I've been to other countries, but didnt consider myself roughing it enough to warrant these precautions. This trip seems a little more... adventurous. :-)

I've stepped up the daily conditioning routine to 120 pushups, 80 leglift situps, 80 right hand crunchs, 80 left hand, 20 palm forward pull ups, 20 palm backward pull ups, and increased the stair climb to 12 laps, which is about 600 steps... which is something like 40-50 flights. This still takes about half and hour, and I've added a ten mile mountain bike ride to the list, which is hitting about every other day. I often tow the little girl in the trailer, which makes it a 40lb tow, and man, its like pedalling through molasses :D but is quality time with the baby. Every day I try to add a few reps to this whole thing.. by next week hopefully I'll be at at least 20% more, and by the time October hits I'll have doubled this, but its hard as hell to find a whole clear hour a day plus the bicyce time, and moto riding. Plus work, and family time.

woof.

Woods practice:

The weather just recently turned into Autumn, but up till last weekend, it was like this here:

Jason, you are nuts. WOW on that training regimen. I think you have the right approach; conditioning will go a long way towards preserving your attitude at the end of a hard day. If you get worn out, you start doing dumb stuff and then you get mad.  BTDT. But you know all about that.

As for riding all of that rocky crap on the PD, don't go trashing 'my' motor now, hear? :)

Chris is trying to talk me into PB and Shen500. Hopefully I've missed the deadlines.

Sounds like a good workout regiment Jason, I have been getting up at 4:30am for a quick 30 minute arobic workout and riding the Mountain bike when I get home. Today I have a doctors appt for a physical, my doctor would not give me the vaccinations until I had one.

I am still hoping on getting to the pine Barons this weekend and picked up a new rear TKC for the job. We still have a few weekends remaining if you can free up one I could go back.

If you are around on Saturday afternoon maybe I can stop by, or meet you at Max's. What time you going there??

Well i gotta get to work, I will call you tonight

Great to hear your coming to play in the sand.

I'll have my Van in the pines so you can store your gear while we ride.
