Gentlemen, my wife and I are planning on enjoying a vacation in California's Wine Country. The second and third week of November this year, which is supossed to be off-season. However, we have noticed that the current lodging offers, mainly form hotel chains or boutique hotels, is quite expensive, both in Napa and Sonoma.

We'll appereciate your insights in regard to quality lodging in the "moderate" rates. We are looking for a place where we can really feel that we are disconnected from the day to day world and still be covered by the good things of civilisation (camping is not acceptable for this vacation).

Is it smart to establish our base camp in one place for all the stay? or would it be better to choose a place for Sonoma and another for Napa? Do you know and recommend a Bed & Breakfast place? Why?

All your advised is wellcomed and appreciated. Thanks a lot. BlitzBernie

I've noticed that no one has replied, probably because like me they have no specific advice.

sounds great, my wife and I have done Tuscany by car in their wine district and found having a centralized B&B made us feel local gave us some local folks to talk to that knew the area and had good recommendations etc.

I'd check into B&B web sites , I looked at a website before that offered all sorts of B&Bs it was  B&B association that had reviews etc.

Good luck and have fun

Thank you verymuch!

Hey BlitzBernie,

The cheapest hotels inthe Sonoma Valley will either be the Sonoma Valley Inn Best Western orthe El Dorado Hotel. Both places are located on Highway 12 or West NapaSt. but the Best Western is one block from the Sonoma City Square. These will be the cheapest but there is no cheap lodging in eitherValleys. Sonoma Valley is just about 12 miles from Napa but the NapaValley extends to Calistoga which is about 25 miles to the north.B&B's are nice but tend to be more expensive than the hotels. You'll be here at a really nice time as the vines are changing theircolors. Hope this helps,

Blitzbernie,

My wife and I really enjoy visiting Napa/Sonoma wine country. It is a (long) one day drive from our home in WA state. We've been there a number of times over the years and have stayed in various motels/hotels (no B&B's tho). I'd suggest finding a "base camp" and exploring from there. We like to stay in Sonoma at the Best Western. Napa and Sonoma are both great but we prefer the Sonoma Valley over the Napa Valley - mostly because it is less developed (relatively speaking) and we enjoy searching more for the wineries in Sonoma as it is more rural/country. Hwy-29 north out of Napa is a super-busy two-lane road. It does calm down a bit as you get farther north. East of 29 is the Silverado Trail - a nice road with wineries along the way. All that said, nothng in Napa/Sonoma area is cheap! Just some things are less expensive than others. Have fun!
