Hi, newbie here, just picked up a 08- R1200gs adv.

Wondered if anyone has has water issues with the BMW Aluminum hard bags, the bike was sitting in the rain for a few hours & the side bags had a significant amount of water in them....??

I was told they were waterproof.....

Thanks.

Yeah, it's a wired one. I had water in my cases before too. Next time I can't get the lid off because of temperature induced pressure difference. Go figure...thinking

Since they are slightly tilted forward, just drill a small hole in them so the water can drain. Actually, two holes in each case, so you can use the side and center stand.

Pour some water in them to see where it collects (side stand / center stand) then drill the holes

Hi Chris

The BMW side cases are meant to be water tight. I spoke with the guys at Touratech (they manufacture them for BMW) and this is their advice, "there is a small channel where the top and bottom halves meet. There is a silicone gasket in place and this make for a great seal. But, be careful when closing to be sure they are lined up properly, and that the wire retainer doesn't get closed in between" I agree with their assesment. Mine are totally water tight and even airtight. When I change altitude in one of the canyons I ride there is an air release when I open them! If there is a problem I would consult your dealer and not put up with leaky bags.

All the best,

Probably be getting mine next month when I'm back in the US.  What liners are you all using?  I'm leaning toward the Kathy's Design Bags from Bob's BMW at $100 per pair. http://store.bobsbmw.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=952

They should be watertight.  When closing, I'd check to be sure that the seal on the lid is aligning and bedding properly.

Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure that the lid was lined up, it's very hard to close them if they are out of line. I've rotated the seal to see if that helps....

Maybe it's condensation ? I don't know if you have big variance in temp during the day to night but aluminum will condensate??   Just a thought..
