Cold but at least patches of sunlight made for a really neat day. Rode the R27 home from Farmington Hills, that makes for a nice 50 mile hike via the surface streets. Ups and downs: Down, someone chromed the fenders. UP, it looks OK. Down, 50 MPH is just right for the upper limit with me on it. I don't want to hurt it. Up, I like to putter around anyway. Down, the rear main seal let go on the way home. Up, now I know why the clutch was slipping. Up, I've got all winter...

Kevin, that is an absolute gorgeous
motorcycle. "Simplistic",

The tank has the most graceful
lines, probably the nicest
i've seen.

Hey, traveling at 50 requires its
own set of strategies, has its own
rewards.
/
really enjoyed the up to down commentary.
/
keep us posted on the rear seal
replacement. Harbor Freight is
running a special on ball peen
hammers this month, they come
in a variety pack. Just in case
things get serious, :)

love it Kevin, great find

Wonderful piece of machinery.  Beautiful.  Loving that front suspension.

Is that a priming button on top of the float bowl?

Kevin,

You did good man, looks just like mine except for the fenders. Mine were "Plastic" in the front. Black in the back.

This bike will give you no end of joy in learning how to repair ans restore, and you have the advantage now of the internet ,for info and parts. The one thing I didn't have.

The ride is pretty cool, HUH !!! It's a head turner for sure. Don't ever sell her!! But if you ever do give me a shot first !

JCwink

PS: Bing tickler if I remember, C

Fantastic.  I'm always looking for an onld airhead or thumper like this.  I know it's none of my business, but if you don't mind, I'd be interested in how much that baby set you back.  Again, just ignore this post if you don't want to answer.

Rob, I don't mind.  But you must first endure the story that goes with the price.

I was sniffing around Craigs list for an old bike to mess around with. Found a promising looking Harley. 1948 blah, blah, blah. Almost a realistic price. E-mailed and got no response. Went back on to see if the ad had dropped out and found this R27. No photo, only the phone number. Called and arranged a time to go look. Met "Al".  Great guy, honest "no promises" bike. Started on the first kick (kick only by the way). Al is 81 years old and doesn't look a day over 60. WWII Navy vet, 20 career man. Then worked another 20 for the gas company. He was selling his motorcycles because he has been getting a bit dizzy now and then, and thought he'd better quit while he's ahead. Still, he's an active Coast Guard reservist. I want to have at least half his spark when I'm 80.

So, the price. I didn't mention that he also had a /5 like mine that he sold. He had mucho left over parts for it too. He gave those to me (just because??).  AND he had the 2 up seat , another tank, all the manuals as well as a small pile of other parts for the R27. It was such a pleasure just to meet a guy like him it woulda' been worth the drive even if I hadn't bought it.

JC, to be sure I'll ask you first- After my son of course. But She's a keeper.

Terry, of course you can take her out for a scoot. But you gotta come to her, she's not comming to you.   By the way, that "Dover White" bike pictured above, if original only 50 were made. Cool story that goes with all that.

C, yes. You ought to know a "tickler" when you see one. But it seems odd to see the bowl on the side , instead of the bottom of the carb.  Original Bing.

of all the uncertainties; of this I am sure,
.
if fate smiles kindly on me, when I
resign in twilight years,
there will be one naked motorcycle
in my possession, of which oil and
fuel will be drained. It will be placed on
display in the living room, and warm
my aged being with its presence.

Terry, several problems with that bike:

1) It's in TOO good condition: nothing to tinker with

2) It's in TOO good condition: I wouldn't feel right riding it around

3) $12k Canadian.  That's what now, about $47,000 US????

Kevin,

I think those look like the stock fenders?

Mine had a hinge in the back fender, thats how you can tell for sure, but the crome looks very good in my HO !

Nice bike, Kevin!  And don't worry, 40-50 mph should be great fun when you're sporting an open-faced helmet, WWII aviator goggles and a silk scarf. smile

I finally recognized that mill.  It looks like a super-sized version of the Cox killer bee .049 engine on model plane I once owned.  Pretty much works the same way too.  Ya drizzle a little fuel into the jug and you let loose on a spring-loaded starter-gizmo
