Okay.  Who's was the better acting:

Billy Bob Thornton as Karl in Slingblade? or

Dustin Hoffman as Raymond in Rainman?

Personally I think Thornton should have gotten an Oscar for his role as Karl.  He disappeared into that role.  There is no Thornton visible in Karl.

Hoffman on the other hand, as Raymond, to my eye is simply Hoffman acting like an idiot savant.  Hoffman is always apparent.  Hoffman won an Oscar for Raymond.

Thornton was robbed.

Oh, an aside . . . I firmly believe that we each and we all should strive to achieve Karlhood in our daily lives.

I'm just saying . . .

You know . . .

Hoffman.  Acting like an idiot savant.

No question... BB gets the nod and for exactly

the reason you mentioned.

Hoffman never stopped letting me know that Hoffman was doing the gig.

Same holds true for me regarding Jack Nicholson and Robert Dinero.

I'm always aware of the Superstar @ work.

Then you have folks like Ben Kingsley who are just totaly amazing.

if you haven't seen Sexy Beast C... rent it. Kingsley gives a stunning

performance as a bloodless hit man. A completely chilling performance.

If you truly want to appreciate his range, watch Ghandi first or Turtle Diary first.

Yeah.  A real idiot savant wouldn't have perfect Hollywood Blvd. hair.

And why on Earth would an actor want to pull up when going retard.  I'm thinking go full friggin retard, or don't go retard at all.

Just rent Tropical Thunder when it goes Netflix.  You'll get the reference.

Robert Downey Jr. does his thing so well, and you have to strain to spot Tom Cruise.

Anybody seen...

A Friend Indeed?

At theatres now... limited release....

Documentary about a fellow institutionalized for 35 or so years beginning at about age 7 due to mental challenges, eventually "adopted" and taken to Iowa.......... guaranteed to bring tears at some point.....

PS.  My vote goes to Thornton almost always.  Hoffman on occasion (loved him in Tootsie) and almost never to Cruise (I keep seeing this dude jumping up and down on a sofa).

Yeah, I'm not a Cruise fan at all.  To my eye, he's got too many teeth or something.  And like many of the others he usually plays himself acting in a part.

And that couch thing was just bizarre.

funny thing is I never actually saw the couch thing.... just heard about it... but it didn't surprise me at all...

I was about to say I liked him in Risky Business, but thinking back, I'm pretty sure it was Rebecca De Mornay that is the reason I've seen the movie at least ten times in my life...
