Dodging Cold Rain Up High

Was gonna ride east for lunch and "tour" some canyons along the way.  Saw menacing clouds that direction so pointed the front wheel west to nearby Kenosha Pass and South Park.  Uncertain weather developed quickly, and while it seems I'm usually a magnet for precipitation, this time it was falling everywhere but where I was at!

So the tiny pocket camera was challenged with the significant lighting diffs, but here's the lunch ride anyway.

Paused at the southside of 10,001ft. Kenosha Pass, staring down the enveloping darkness...

Scooted to the South Park meadows below and skirted the rain for a misty view of the Mosquito Range...

OK, there's a sliver of sun and warmth which draws the bike towards it, but the brakes are applied before the chip and seal becomes only chip...

Looking another direction 13,370ft. Mt. Guyot on the right withstands the cold precip while the aspen put on their golden clothes.  The wheels almost reflect the shades of the moody sky...

So this is a LUNCH ride but the pickins are slim in nearby Jefferson.  There isn't anything else for 30 miles.  70 years ago the only motorized access to the Park was by wheels on rails.  Jefferson 1937...

But today there are other options for motorized access and one finds a sweet BBQ sandwich for a calm outdoor lunch as the caboose intercepts the wind, and the rain continues to unsuccessfully find me...

What a great lunch ride! Great pictures, too.
Just the same, I think the one from 1937 is my favorite.

Great photos--and what a sweet bike.  Nothing like mountain weather to keep you guessing.  Was hoping for a multiple day ride that would include the San Juan Skyway.  Getting kind of late in the season now.  What are your favorite Rocky Rides?

Sfarson,

Great to see you post up some Colorado Beauty again. Looks like a nice new bike? Want to give a report on its abilities?

Thanks so much for that little taste of beauty Steve.

As always, you bring the delights of your riding area to the table and set them out to be enjoyed.

Really loved the black and white photo!!  Thank you!

Nice looking bike, Steve.  Is that the stock rear end, or did you eliminate some fender?

Thanks all.  It was a fine way to spend the lunchtime hour... or two. cool

Vanman... Did leave a Silver Thread & San Juan ride report last year, here: http://www.bmwxplor.com/forums/topic/show/1804#new

The Silver Thread Scenic Byway is on my very short list of favorite Colorado Rides.  The San Juan Skyway would be up there.  Let's see, other favorites... Well you know, the list would be long.  Here's a Colorado Scenic Byway web site, and all of them are two wheeled sweet!... http://www.coloradobyways.org/Main.cfm

JC... Been a long time sporty boxer fan as you know.  On the road this series of bikes has few peers.  Currently take the Duc to the track but will be circling circuits on the HP next year as well.

Ordered the HP2 Sport last October and it arrived in May.  Vin #33.  Sold the R1200S to help fund.  In person, the thing is stunning.  Munich didn't miss a thing.  From the rearsets, to the triples, the suspension, exhaust, wheels, belly pan, console, CF everywhere (All that white is CF as well), to etc. and etc., the attention to detail is unprecedented.  BMW demonstrated what they can pull off visually if they want to.  More expensive exotica from Bologna doesn't match the fit/finish/styling touches of this thing, and I know firsthand wink.  More than a few have asked if it is a custom bike personally built.

Can note its track pedigree here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n3xZBR4jhY  The new DOHC flat twin delivers quite the exhaust note (listen at :42 of the vid).

The ergos are similar to the R1200S (More committed than the 11S, but roomier than bread & butter liter bikes).  The dry weight is down the 392lbs.  How about that!  And it is noticeable on pretzeled roads.  What separates this from other flat twins is a rev ceiling up to 9500 and serious giddy-up and go above 5000, seamlessly all the way to the limit.

There you go.  Keep that MS ready to go!

Thanks for the info source, Steve.  I have been over some of those roads, but it's been 11 years since my wife, Katie, and I honeymooned at Pagosa Springs and Durango.  I didn't have a bike at the time, but recognized the roads were made for two wheeling.  When I do make it out, I will likely ride through southeast WY, entering CO via Craig, Dinosaur, and Rangely, to Grand Junction.  So much to see.  You live in God's Country.

Thanx for that bike report ,it sounds like a real nice ride. And as far as nice rides go ,you know them all very well.

I'm getting ready to leave tomorrow on the "Rabbit" for the Falling Leaf Rally in Potosi, MO with my son [Dan-30].

It's my first attempt back after my March Crash and I'm very positive about it and excited to get rolling again.
