My GPS Garmin Street Pilot 2730 after 3 seasons suddenly decided to loose the screen film like a snake changes skin!

The thin matt film on the screen peeled off. The unit kept working but was hard to see in bright light.

First I noticed a little bubble or blister, then in the next 2 days the bubble spread to the whole screen and finnaly breaking an flying of.

I send it for repair in and got it replaced, but now I wonder if same thing will happen again in 3 yrs. Garmin did not give any feedback why that happened. Yes I ride in sun and rain, but it supposed to be weather resistant right?

Any of you have had that problem?

I may have had it all wrong but that film is simply a protective layer they put on the screen during packaging. It's designed to be removed by the end user if he/she so desires upon opening the box. The REAL screen surface is the glass underneath.

There ARE some adhesive polarizing screen filter film available in the aftermarket which you can use to replace the old one. It's designed to make poratble game consoles easier to see in bright light.

That was my first thought also, but no, that is not the case.

There is a very thin film glued to the glass to prevent reflection and runs totally into and under the frame or black housing. I double checked that meticulosly. After the film bubbled and ripped of the suface of the  glass changed completely, it was very shiny like a mirror with a blueish tint.

Garmin send me a totally new unit with different serial #. Therfore something went wrong with the glass.

I am just puzzled what caused it, and wonder if it will happened again.

Must be the actual polarizing layer actually built into the screen glass. I'm guessing high temperatures, UV, humidity, warpage due to vibration or mechanical strain from the mounts (?) or any combination thereof. Keep fingers crossed and hopefully, your case was just a one off fluke and doesn't happen again. smile

I would contact your dealer or Garmin.  It is my understanding the protective layer will be repaired.  Good Luck.

Thank you all,

It is repaired, just waiting to hear if  someone had this problem and find the cause!

Garmin did not give any feedback on that and they should know.....

You may want to call Daytona BMW and talk to Bill in the parts department.  I believe he had a peeling display issue with a garmin unit too.

I think the GPS peeling deal is from all the temperature extremes you and Pedro go thru: From a foot of snow in WI to the next day baskin' in the sun of TX ! And back and forth from Jeans or other southern climes to your cold home in the frosty North ???...

But WTFDIK

JC wink
