has anyone come across an alternative tank bag, other than the  300 DOLLAR bmw product. Is there another manufacturer that has been able to attach the bag using the bmw tank mounts? frank

Nope.

At least having a front brake comes standard instead of being a $300 option.

No, but I do use my Nelson-Rigg $50 tank bag. It had some extra tank padding on the bottom so I just trimmed it off with a knife. The tank bag is universal with straps no magnets. I would recommend going with a strap type mount vs. magnetic mount due to the odd shape and BMW's obtrusive mounting system.

The dealer gave me the $300 bag as part of the pricing I negotated for.  Is it worth $300?  No way!Actually it is way bigger than I like.  It is sitting in my closet unused, but maybe if I go on a long trip I'll put it in service.

I have a Manta bag that holds everything I need and is not such a huge monstrosity, but I cannot quite figure out how to mount it yet.  However, I have a few ideas and observations that mght be helpful.  The weird racky thing comes off very easiy, 2 screws in front and two at the rear, accessible when you remove the seat.  It is hollow plastic.  The tank cover also comes off pretty easily in two sections.  An idea I had was to use some of those rare earth type magnets (easy to buy on the web) and glue or tape them under the tank or racky thing so that a magnetic bag could stick to it.  The rare earth magnets are the same items most magnetic tank bags use.  Think it could work?

No kidding, is that yours?  I saw it somewhere and thought it reminded me of somewhere down near Pine on the way south.  Looks just like my bike so I hope you don't mind.  It was just such a great shot!

No problemo!  This Elk Creek Rd. the picture was taken from winds its way from Shaffer's Crossing on 285 down to Sphinx Park, the Elk Creek Canyon, and ends in Pine Grove.  Good guess!

Maybe you saw the image at bmwsporttouring.com

 Good riding,

Can't help you with using the straps (I abandoned anything with straps several years ago but that's another story)  You might look at Twistedthrottle.com as they have an assortment of bags that mount onto a bracket that attaches to your gas cap.  I have one on my GT and I like it a lot.  It is an exceptionally high quality product.  I suspect that your gas cap is much like mine.  There is also supposedly something made by "contact" that you can affix to the bottom of a magnetic bag and it will magically stick on a plastic tank like the magnets would.  You can buy it at Home Despot and it's cheap.  I haven't tried it but I'm gonna in an effort to make a magnetic bag work on my husband's LT.  Good Luck.

Thanks, Ajax!  Flirtin is good for society and I highly condone it.  Also, it made me feel good.  Now, you stay away from any Leakey pictures else the cold truth about my appearance may stifle your urges to think kind thoughts.  No, twasn't me you saw.  Ride safe and often.

Laissez le Bon Temps Rouler, yall.
