Hi everyone

A little about me. I’m 22 years old and live in Muncie, Indiana. I’ve been riding for three years now. My parents have been riding since before I was born and they also did some motocross racing. I started riding on a Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary 1200 Sportster. It sure was shiny but that was about it. About a year to a year and a half later I start hearing some talk of a new bike coming from BMW.

I always liked the BMW bikes but they never seemed to have one that fit what I was looking for, although the R1100S did come close. But I wanted more performance than it could offer at the time.

Well my dad had me come down to Florida, where he’s working at the time, for Daytona’s Bike Week. (He does catastrophy insurance claims so he’s all over the US.) Well we ride past where all the manufactures are set up showing off their latest bikes and I swear that we will stop their one time. Well I say it and say it and we finally stop on the second to last day of Bike Week. We look all over and finally make it to the BMW area AND THEY ARE GIVING FREE DEMO RIDES!!! Lucky me they have a K1200S. Bad news is you have to have a helmet, mine was back at camp, and you had to be 25 to ride the K1200S. What a pain.

So I suggest we head over to the BMW dealer on Main Street just to take a look around. Well they have one brand new blue and white K1200S left. It’s my personal favorite colour for the K1200S. Everyone there is real nice and very happy to help with any questions. I’ve been obsessing over this bike since I first heard about it so I know all the spec and don’t have any questions, unfortunately my dad does. I’ve been trying to hide the fact that it has 167hp the whole time, he’s had several friends get hurt on their race bikes so obviously he is worried about a, at the time, 21 year old owning a bike like this. Well I get the big dad talk about how that much power can be deadly but he trust me so he knows I won’t do anything too crazy story. He then said I had to call my mom and tell her I wanted it. God did I get another ear full from her. Well they both eventually calm down and all was good.

I traded in my 03 Harley Sportster for my brand new 06 BMW K1200S (my picture is of my bike sitting on the show room floor) at around 7:00pm my second to last day in Daytona. First trip was around the corner to the helmet shop to pick up a new helmet that matched my blue and white K1200S. I got to put around 55 miles on my bike that night through the city of Daytona. I had to leave the next morning at 6:00am to catch a plane back to Indiana, which meant I had to leave my bike behind with my dad and he wasn’t coming home for a month. Talk about the longest month in recorded history.

I fell madly in love with this bike the day I heard about it and new I had to have one. Now that I have one, I love it even more. If there is a lesson to be learned from this then it must be, don’t get something just because it’s shiny or go to the bike expo THE FIRST DAY!!!!
