ABOUT ME
I’ve been riding motorcycles since 1975 and BMWs since 1991 after purchasing my first BMW, a new 1990 R100 GS.
I’ve bought 10 Japanese and 6 BMW motorcycles over the years. Of those, I still own 5; four BMW GS models and a Kawasaki KLR 650.
Even though I live here, I’d have to say that I’ve done most of my riding during my self-guided annual motorcycle tours in Europe, specifcally the Alps. My 2008 Euro Tour marked my 14th year in a row touring the Alps.

I have a set of Hella FF50 driving lights on each of my GS Adventures.
For the price, they are hard to beat and a very popular choice with riders. I paid about $60 for one set and $30 when Cabela's happened to have them.
They light up the road very well. Lighting up the road where I won't be for another minute is quite pointless and only annoys oncoming drivers. I did't need the "let me impress you with my lights" effect. I looked at PIAAs but they we...

I like the BMW 3-switch set-up because it makes sense. Unfortunately, the rest of the world can't chew gum and walk at the same time.

Coming from quite a few Japanese motorcycles and even a 1990 BMW R100 GS that had the "so-called" normal turn signal switch, I never had a problem with them...even now when I am switching back and forth between my GS Adventures and a KLR 650.
But then I also think its easy to roll an aircraft all the way down the runway on one wheel when I'm practicing my cross-wind landings. That takes coordination!

This month's BMWMOA ON has a write-up on the SPOT, but like most write-ups, they talk about the frosting on the cake instead of the really important stuff like specifications, how the device works in detail, its limitations and most importantly, they don't perform unbiased testing.

For tracking and help requests, the unit is fine, but there is no way I would bet my life on it for emergency assistance.
For those who don't care for the frills, but want a device that they can count on for life threatening situations, then consider a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).
The SPOT has too many short comings when it comes to that feature. And I'm not going to put my life int he hands of a sat-phone company. PLBs are serviced by a world-wide governm...
