09/04/07 - Re: Surging

Great to hear that your bike is back to normal!  There’s nothing like a great running oilhead.  However, a poorly running bike can ruin your day.   Oilhead’s can easily display surging-like symptoms.  My R1100RT was running poorly at idle yesterday.   Some would call it surging.   It was simply dirty large brass screws and a slightly out of synch throttle...

I don't disagree with the fact that a large percentage of modern motorcycles have lean fuel issues due to trying to meet environmental regulation.

However, the surging sensation experienced by closed-loop BMW owners on this site is very different.  BMW closed-loop motorcycles have an 02 sensor in the exhaust.  This 02 sensor provides a signal anytime the air-fuel mixture strays from stoichiometric and the ECU immediately corrects the miixture back until the signal dis...

Surging was never a problem for BMW when closed-loop surging motorcycles were only available in the US.  It was an American problem and frankly BMW had little concern.  I don't know where you live. But open-loop bikes were never available in the US.  All the R1100 series motors were closed-loop in the US and a portion of them surged.   Surging was not a problem for Europe until the R1150 series motors were produced ONLY in closed-loop.  Again, not all ...

If you use the BOSCH Potentiometer solution, your simply converting an R1100 series motor to a European standard.  A good argument can be made that the European standard is more reliable than the US closed-loop standard.

We will have to agree to disagree.  Many bikes from all different makes are running overly lean to meet the strict EU and EPA standards.   These bikes display surging like systems, since they too are running overly lean.  With my Ducati ST3, it ran very lean under 4000 rpms.  However, since my Ducati has no 02 sensor, the lean condition was very constant...like it is on all the Harleys or Japanese bikes without 02 sensors.  This condition is very different and much ...
