ABOUT ME
Rode my 1st “motorcycle” in 1968, a trailhorse minibike. Crashed it brutally in front of entire family, becoming hooked for life. My current stable is a Suzuki DR650, a 1991 HD Softail Classic, and my 2008 BMW R1200R. The beemer is my favorite bike for longer rides, being able to get about 300 highway miles on a tank of gas along with a roomy riding position and good performance. When not riding I like to go caving, especially in TAG home of spectacular cave systems, especially the amazing open air pits like Valhalla and Neversink.

It'll start much easier in warm weather. I've had tough times getting bikes to start when they've been sitting a month or more and the nightly temp is in the 30s or below, but if they've been sitting a month or so and the temp is in the 50s or above the same bike will start much easier. I wouldn't worry about it.

My R1200R routinely gets mid 50's on the highway with 2 instances of 60 or better. About the same as my DR650. In city traffic it takes a hit, unlike my thumper which doesn't seem affected too much. The virtues of only 1 cylinder!

When I only weighed a little over 100 lbs(long time ago) my XL250 could keep up with traffic. An MP3 is a little heavier and may have more difficulty, but I'm just guessing - I've never ridden one. If she can handle the weight, I'd go for one of the larger versions. Hopefully someone with experience can t...

The forecast tonight is 14 degrees, so tomorrow I'll be riding to work in a tourmaster transitions jacket with insulated liner, sweatshirt underneath that and a scarf since the jacket leaks air around the neck enough to be noticeable under 40 degrees. Polaris snowmobile gloves and Polaris snowmobile bibs try to keep the cold at bay for hands and legs. The bibs have no armor or ballistic nylon, so they'd be little help in a "whoops", but they make a big difference when the temp...

I had also read about the faulty bearing/bearing seal, but also that the final drive failures started happening when BMW declared the final drive to not require oil changes for the life of the bike. They now recommend changing the FD fluid at the 600 mile break-in service and I've seen from the forums that some owners are doing it to coincide with tranny oil changes.
