GS Trophy, Part 1- Almost not there

So here I stand, on the heels of becoming a final contestant in the first ever BMW GS Trophy Challenge. Wow. Friggin’ WOW.

This has been an interesting path for me. Especially since here was a time when I thought I had taken my last motorcycle ride!

It’s been a long time coming, sharing this story for all to see. For years I’ve wanted to put pen to paper and get it out, and now seems like the right time. I hope you enjoy it.

It was a sunny mid-year day when it happened. An 18 bike group weaving their way through California twisties. I was several riders back, video taping the fun with my shiny new helmet camera. The fog had just broken and the footage was finally getting good. I banked and weaved along, picking smooth paths around the riders, working in some smiles and waves for the camera as I passed. I settled in behind a James and Shannon, husband and wife, getting the shots as they negotiated their bike along the tarmac.

There wasn’t much warning, just a tingle in my spine that something was out of place. I remember speaking out loud, saying something typical and useless, like, Oh Sh**.... no no nono!!

I’ve seen it a million times, and even on video it’s hard to say what happened. But the end result was a low-side, a 70mph drop on a left hand sweeper. Their bike slid almost gracefully along, impacting the dirt embankment, producing a dusty explosion of parts and debris. To date it is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.

With a panicked crunch I grabbed my brakes, slowing hard and wild. Still I careened toward the dust cloud. As my speed scrubbed I made out a shape, rolling toward me from the chaos. It was James, prone and helpless, directly in my path.

Inches from him I stopped. Tossing my bike aside I leaped toward him, looking for any sign of movement. To my relief he groaned and rolled. I scampered past him to Shannon.

I slid to my knees at her side. Fear frozen, her wide eyes darted to mine. Tears were welling, her mouth gaped open.

I remembered my EMT medical training, a smattering of classes I had taken way back when. I tried to be calming. “Heeey, bit of a wild ride you took, eh?”

“Shawn! I’m scared! I think I’m hurt,” she blurted back. At least she was lucid and talking.

“Hey don’t worry, I got ya. Help’s on the way, we’re gonna get you all sorted out.”

“Is James ok? Oh my god please tell me he’s ok!!”

I looked up at James. He was on his feet, hands on his back. He looked at me, then her. I waived and gave him a thumbs up. We eyed a silent exchange. She’s ok. Don’t worry, we’re ok here.

I looked back to Shannon. “James is fine,” I assured her, “He’s good. Just doing his post-crash Yoga. He’ll be here in a sec. So tell me what you’re feeling? You ok?”

The rest occurred in the predictable manner. Lots of flashing lights and stretchers. In the end, James and Shannon came away with notable injuries, yet all of them treatable. They have since enjoyed a full recovery, and remain riders to this day.

But seeing this event took its toll on me. Once home I studied my bike somberly, replaying the events in my minds eye. It all happened so fast, I thought. No Warning. It could’ve been me laying there in the dirt. The bike stared back at me. It was different. No Joy, no passion. Nothing I was used to seeing.

Maybe I’m done riding. Maybe it’s time for other endeavors, I thought. After what I had seen, could riding ever be the same? Could I truly find the joy and passion for riding again? Or should I simply quit while I was ahead, satisfied with the fun I had, lucky to have escaped injury?

Yeah. I think I’m done. I’m done.

Aug 09, 2008 - Tunisia

Shawn is a great guy. He dropped out of the '07 Adventure Riders Challenge when Burnszilla broke his leg on a day ride. I think Shawn should be selected to go to Tunisia, right behind me!

Aug 09, 2008 - Being good natured is underrated

Shawn has a fantastically upbeat personality; one that ensues when times are tough. He's a team player and we want him to go to TUNISIA!!!!!

Aug 09, 2008 - yeah baby!

Shawn, you would make an excellent addition to Team USA, you have all the right stuff! Unfortunately I can not make it (does that sound at all like I was not picked) however with HarderKev and you on team USA, and my other secret undisclosed personal pick, I know the trophy will be ours! Ok, I'll whisper my other pick..move closer...I have to whisper.....sounds like Bil...Dra...GGGOOOOOHHHHHHH. Good luck!

Aug 10, 2008 - Good luck!

Shawn, you certainly sound like you have an effervescent personality :D Good luck, I think you may actually be as excited as me, and that sure takes some doing, -heh- Hope to meet you either in Spartanburg, or Africa, or somewhere on the trail!

Aug 10, 2008 - Passion for motorcycles

Shawn you have this one in the bag, otherwise someone has passed over one of the biggest most talented motorcycle enthusiasts in the USA. All these years we've been friends your amazing stories have given those of us on the outskirts of the motorcycle world something to dream about. You've attempted some pretty awesome stuff and at last count still had 2 arms and 2 legs, and that has to demonstrate some serious skills!!!! Seeing you take those corners at those speeds, dang! Add in your naturally tall, handsome physique, great humor and goatee (oh and a lot of leather) you are the poster child of this race! Let us know when the call comes in that you're on your way!! Dawn & Mike.

Aug 10, 2008 -

Sand, mud, rock and gravel are not an obstacle for Shawn Thomas- they seem to just bring out the best in his riding skills. I have seen him take his bike in places I won’t, and I have seen him make that GS fly, and I mean fly. I have seen Shawn go from an above average to a great rider in the 8 years I have known him. I guess all those trips to Adventure camp and Death Valley have really paid off. I would put him up against anybody and know that he would meet the challenge. As far as team work is concerned let me first say that Shawn is a natural leader. And a natural leader knows when it is time to lead or follow, and which is best for the team. I have seen Shawn go from the front of the pack to the back of the pack, always making sure everyone is safe and still in the fold. Shawn is always full of encouragement and helping push everyone to their next level. As I told Shawn in our last trip, I being a Marine Combat Vet, and quite a bit older, that I would follow Shawn into combat anytime, anywhere. This is a compliment I have reserved for less than a handful I people I known. His teamwork skills and his ability to work within a group are exceptional, and have no doubt he would be a great asset to any team. I think Shawn would be a great representative for the USA. Extremely friendly, and lighthearted, I have never seen him lose his temper in any situation. I believe he appreciates all cultures and would make for a great diplomat. As I said earlier Shawn’s caring and watching over everyone in his rides is quite exceptional. He cares for the group like a mother hen, always encouraging and helping anyone in need, and never putting anyone at risk. If there is a break down he is the first one there to offer assistance, whether it be a tire pump or a wrench. He takes great pride in offering encouragement and helping his fellow riders succeed, and improving their rider skills, helping them take challenges they might not have otherwise tried. I think this adventure is a challenge that Shawn is more than up to, and will excel at, as well as help those around him. Words from- Leatherneck, Matt Shaw 8-10-08

Aug 11, 2008 - Bravo!

First of all, congratulation Shawn! I so whished I could have joined you in South Carolina and then to Africa. Funny how one can mature from the excitement and anticipation of going to Tunisia, go through the total disappointment at not being chosen and discover that two of your favorite motorcyclists and beemerphiles will be flying your colors. It’s my honor and pleasure to try to facilitate your selection by sharing on this blog some of your attributes. Your speak of your love of speed but I propose a new acronym for you: "FAST". F is for Fitness. You're the man, the specimen! (Oh to be young again!) A is for Ambassador. Your love of BMW is unequaled. (Ask his customer!) S is for Skill. Those shredded side walls say a lot. (Oh to be young again, again!) T is for Team work. Can you remember Laguna Seca 2008, where with almost no notice, you offered your help with housing, food and transportation? (Glad I took you up on it!) "FAST" combined with your enthusiasm and your "joie de vivre" (shameless plug at my Frenchness!) will be an unbeatable combination in Spartanburg. Shawn, you get my unequivocal support and my best wishes for this new challenge. Raphael Bertolus, Rider Coach @ RawHyde Adventures PS: Don’t you need a French translator in Tunisia ???

Aug 12, 2008 - Shawn in Tunisia!

BMW, this guy is perfect for Team USA! Outstanding rider and an all-around great guy! I haven't known Shawn for very long but when I met him he immediately made me feel like an old friend. And a plus, he even sells the GS!!!!! One knowledgeable man on those bikes! Good luck Shawn.

Aug 13, 2008 - Shawn is THE MAN!!!

I've known Shawn for 4 years - meeting him at the first RawHyde Adventures - California Adventure Rally. That was back in April 2005 - I was on my first BMW, an R1200GS, and my first time on dirt. I remember Shawn's passion for riding... see other people enjoying themselves.... he had so much passion for the dual-sport rides and the people he rode with he would take video footage of the rides and interviewing the riders, and then produced amazing videos that I still enjoy watching to this day to see my first days on in the dirt on two wheels. I was on a dual-sport ride with Shawn at the 2007 RawHyde Adventure Challenge where one of our fellow riders broke a leg far from help, no cell phone coverage, and there would be no way for an emergency vehicle to reach us on the dirt roads we were on. Shawn was on the ball - quickly helping to stabilize the situation, then riding off to find help with our GPS coordinates. When Shawn returned, he had a paramedic on the back of his GS and a helicopter on its way. I am very particular of the people I ride with - being out on the trail, many times far from help, you need to know the people you are with - trust them with your safety and to stay cool and on the ball. Shawn is definitely one of those people.... You couldn't find someone better for Team USA.

Aug 13, 2008 - Gold Star!!

Wow! Top 20. Honestly, I wasn't surprised. I know Shawn was, but that is just his humble nature. I first met Shawn at the dealership where I purchased my first motorcycle, the F650GS. As he patiently showed me over my new bike, I immediately saw that Shawn is very passionate for BMW motorcycles, for riding, and for life. It appeared to me that he is very loyal to every person that crosses his path. These qualities have led to Shawn being my most trusted friend. Shawn has taught me many important tools for riding both on and off-road, and has always been very encouraging with helpful riding tips that have facilitated my improved riding. He certainly has a competitive edge, however knows when it is appropriate to use it. As a lead rider he always knows who he's riding with, their abilities and their limits, and is very honorable of each rider's experience. He is always the first to offer words of encouragement, lend a helping hand, and offer solutions to problems to the less experienced rider. Shawn is highly regarded in the riding community, particularly the GS community, and I have seen first hand why. He is most certainly the right person for this competition. His passion for riding and for BMW motorcycles is very apparent. He will lead a team strongly, and follow direction as needed. He is excellent representation for BMW and the U.S. As a rider and as a person he is loyal, passionate and genuine. Good luck Shawn. This one is worth a gold star! (Heather)

Aug 13, 2008 - The Perfect Choice

Shawn Thomas combines the perfect characteristics for inclusion in this event. He is an excellent rider, regularly pushing himself and his GS to new lengths on the track and in the dirt, as well as teaching others to get more out of themselves and their bikes. I am sure that every one of the 20 finalists must also ride very well, but Shawn has the even more unusual talent of being an excellent communicator. This quality will serve him well as a team member and ambassador during the event. I have worked with Shawn as an advertising consultant in two different businesses. He remains remarkable among the many people I have, and continue to, work with in his ability to tell me what he sees in his mind's eye so that we can work together towards the specific goal of the moment without false starts or messing around trying to help him find a language for what he is trying to communicate. I have always found Shawn easy to work with as a member of a team. He listens, has creative input, always advocates solutions that are a win-win. Perhaps the most elusive human quality that Shawn could offer to this endeavor is his skill as an author. Choosing Shawn would allow BMW to bring this event to the English speaking masses through his outstanding writing ability. I have been lucky enough to be a recipient of many autobiographical short stories he has written. He has demonstrated a huge talent in re-telling events with big helpings of candor, humor, humility and the page turning quality of a novel. I know he is quite talented at what he is doing now, but writing may be his true calling. Shawn's American-styled openness and good nature will make the whole experience better for everyone who's path he crosses - except for the competitors who had hoped to stay in front of him on the course.

Aug 14, 2008 - A Sailor's word...

Open. Teacher. Calm. Resourceful. Knowledgeable. Talented. Diplomatic. Personable. 'BMW-Tastic'. Shawn is the guy that everybody knows, that guy we are all drawn to. If it's not his welcoming smile and compassionate energy - it's the confidence he inspires in all of us to do our absolute best. He's a generator churning our ambitions to ride better on road and off into realize energies. He's my inspiration! Truth be told I've only know him for about a year (and three GS's,) but I would follow him to the edge of the Universe on a GS. He's a beautiful friend and mentor. It was his dream and our planning that carried seven riders through the sand, dust, and windstorms of Death Valley. (Not to mention getting us out of Trona before becoming permanent fixtures...) His leadership and experience taught us that we can do anything and go anywhere on our GS motorcycles by simply "riding within our skill package." His ability to pick a line is uncanny and his skill in either leading a group up that line or encouraging another member to take the reins is out of this world. Through Shawn's encouragement both my wife and I attended the big bike off-road riding Adventure Camp offered by RawHyde Adventures. But it was all the rides with Shawn and our friends on the Monterey Peninsula that drove the (dirt) fundamentals home. Thanks Shawn! Although I raced mountain bikes as a teen and twenties and had an (assumed) leg-up on other beginner dual sport riders, I know I wouldn't be half the GS rider without Shawn's tutelage. I'm active duty military and am a Middle East/North Africa area expert and have traveled extensively through the regions. Shawn's infectiously happy persona and warm smile would draw welcome in any country I've traveled. He doesn't have to try to be diplomatic, it's in his nature. Shawn, Heather and I are in Georgia now and we'll be there for you in the S.C. I'd love to give you a run for your money in this competition, however duty calls...

Aug 15, 2008 - No, seriously....Medal Material !!!!!

Hit "Enter" instead of "Tab"........I am afflicted with vacation brain and it kinda feels good to forget how to use a keyboard....der.... The other bloggers before me have said it all SO well. All I can say is that Shawn T. most definitely embodies what the sport of riding is all about. While his skill is quite amazing, what is truely inspiring about THIS guy is the joy he brings to the sport of riding. It is infectious but it does come with a price......he IS a salesman ya know..... As I have been watching the Olympics this week, I have imagined Shawn representing the U.S. in Tunisia and can easily see him making us all very proud in such an incredible international event. BRING HOME THE GOLD BABY !!!!!!!!!!

Aug 15, 2008 - My Recommendation

I met Shawn about 5 years ago at the local BMW dealership, BMW of Santa Cruz where he works. Although I've never had the opportunity to ride with him personally, I know from comments from others and conversations with him that he is a skilled, well-rounded rider who approaches riding seriously (he's the only rider I know that has been featured in a full-page BMW ad in a national motorcycling magazine!). He has actively pursued improving his riding skill set, both on the track and off-road, something that not all riders do and more should. I know him to be an enthusiastic, energetic, and thoughtful individual, with a rare ability to communicate and connect with almost anyone. He is upbeat, knowledgeable and always a treat to visit with. His riding skills will speak for themselves, but I can vouch for him as an exceptional candidate and the perfect individual for inclusion in the BMW GS Trophy Challenge. Respectfully, Brian Mucke

Aug 15, 2008 - Rock on Shawn!

I'm writing to add my recommendation to many others, that Shawn be included in the BMW GS Trophy Challenge - he is indeed the perfect candidate, and the perfect ambassador for BMW. Shawn has a passion for motorcycles, riding and BMWs in particular, and is one of the most personable, friendly and entertaining personalities on the planet! He is a truly skilled rider and could take on any terrain that Tunisia could throw at him, and he's the first person that would stop to help a riding buddy who had a flat or had wadded. (At the very least he could be counted on to pull up laughing and point out what you did wrong! :-) Sign Shawn up for this trip and you'll be glad he's along - both for the riding and for the company. And besides - you'd be helping his poor wife, Honami, by giving her a much needed break. :-) Cheers, Dherndon954

Aug 15, 2008 - ¡Buena Suerte! Bonne Chance!

Shawn would be an excellent ambassador in the BMW GS Trophy Challenge Tunisia for all BMW USA riders. He is an upbeat, energetic guy who treats everyone he meets as a long-lost friend, mixing easily with a wide range of people. Although I have never had the opportunity to ride with Shawn, by all accounts, he is an excellent rider on the road or off. He continually improves his riding skills and techniques at various motorcycle Adventure Rider Challenges or camps and through everyday experiences. The BMW GS Trophy Challenge Tunisia is not just a passing fancy for Shawn - he really deserves to go and represent all of us!

Aug 15, 2008 - Why Shawn is RAD

Because of Shawn, I ride a motorcycle. The first bike I ever rode was Shawn's 650 gs. Shortly after this, I had to buy one. I was hooked. Because of his great teaching abilities and awesome attitude, the world of motorcycling was opened up to me. Since that fateful day, some 6 years ago, I've worked my way up to the new 1200 and have covered thousands of miles of both dirt and pavement with Shawn. Every time I've dropped my bike, Shawn has been there to help me up. When my water bottles were empty, he offered his camel pack. There is one time in particular in Death Valley that I recall. I'd taken a hard spill off my 650 and busted the headlight. The sun was setting and there was no way we were going to make it back to camp before it was dark. Shawn took the time to ride by my side using his high beam to compensate for both of our low beams. Some two and half hours later we both limped into camp to a worried host and curious audience. I have hundreds of miles of stories like this, all of which include Shawn. I wouldn't think of going gs'ing without him or plan a trip where he wasn't there.

Aug 15, 2008 - From Kert & Lee

(My friends, being pc illiterate as they are, asked for me to add their comments. Thanks so much!) From Kert Davis: So sorry no VIN # here so I could not log on to the sight. However, being the clever guy you may be able to post my glowing report of an unselfish guy who sells a GS to a middle aged guy, then baby-sits him on his first adventure ride to RawHyde camp and return. Only Shawn would do that for a friend. And the friend is eternally grateful for his good humor and patience. His help got me to ride in such places as morocco and china. Without his skills and encouragement I have had the adventures of a lifetime, maybe two. Of course I am buying a new moto from Shawn and can’t wait to ride with him again. I believe he is the type of person any company would want working for them. He is honest, intelligent, patient, knowledgeable and generous with everything he has. He has been very good to me and I believe he is the same with everyone. He is deserving of every opportunity that comes his way, in his work, play or competitions. I would love to see Shawn participate in Tunisia or anywhere else he wants to go. Yeeh, sure he has some great videos of me getting off my moto into the bushes, but he was there to pick me up also. I hope he gets to Tunisia and truly deserves the opportunity. Best of luck always Kert ---- From Lee Shawn: I am the girlfriend of Kert Davis (known to me as caveman Davis), who describes himself as a middle aged guy who bought a GS from you I had a flash back to my meeting you. You were the kindest, most knowledgeable, patient guy I had the pleasure of meeting. There we were, checking out bikes without knowing what the heck we were talking about/looking at, when you generously explained which bike would accomplish what cave wanted to do on a bike... I have to tell you, with tears in my eyes, that cave has had a remarkable life, done some amazing things that would challenge most men for the sheer physical accomplishment, but the most fun he has had...some of the best times in his life started with following Shawn’s tush on his bike for his first adventure ride to rawhide camp on his new GS. He ultimately traveled to morocco and china for the mother of all adventure trips (so far...). China with his son for the trip of lifetime. The trip you remember every moment of for the rest of your life. To go beyond the boundaries of the norm, be with the people who love, on a road less traveled, thanks to a guy who had the patience to talk to a dude who took a risk one day to ask Shawn some questions... Shawn. You deserve to go to Tunisia. - Lee hicks
