ABOUT ME

Tom Fitzgerald -

I have always been an outdoor adventurer, be it hiking, biking, cycle or Jeep/Rover. I have been riding for over 20 years. I started out in off road motorsports in the 90’s. Began with a few trips over the Rubicon Trail in CA, hitting Utah, CO, and the Four Corners area. The Competing started in Ocala, FL in an event called the Safari Triathlon, continued to compete in similar venues in the east until mid 2000s. Had an amazing ride in Chile and have done little else but explore on 2 wheels since. I had always lusted after the BMW dual sport bikes, rooting for them and the 959 Porsches in the Dakar was almost a religion. Short lived, but profound. Something about Oil Cooled I suppose. After using a couple standard bikes for purposes they weren’t designed for, and paying dearly, I finally sprung for the GS. I have yet to find a need it doesn’t meet…......well, you know what I mean. When my son was born my wife (of 20 years come this Jan ) and I gave up the hellish life inside the DC Beltway and we moved to the Charlottesville VA area and I resumed working with my hands. I make things out of wood and metal, (some can be seen on my smugmug account – tfitz4-foolinabout) as well as work on bikes and Rovers, there is a Defender in my shop now that I’m putting a 300tdi in…...everyday is different, just like when out venturing. I feel it is just what I am meant to do. And I am fortunate enough to be Able to.

08/09/08 - GS Trophy - Well, still in the hunt. Quite an honor...

I was fortunate enough to make the first cut for the GS Trophy. I feel very honored by the company I'm keeping. Been a Land Rover fanatic and am so glad to find someone re-light the torch for that style of event. I will keep updates posted here for th ... Read more

I'm fairly confident we will ride as a team unit most of the time. Without knowing anything, I'm essentially preparing for anything. I'm thinking it will be organized into "challenges" that arent necessarily about speed/distance. Like maybe we'll have a start point and a finish line 100 miles away, but in between there is a river with no bridge, and all three of us need to get our bikes across and the finish before the other teams.

I had the privilege to attend as a guest, and for us broken hearted '90', I have posted some photos from the testing done at Spartanburg in my Gallery.  I have those photos and more from the trials in a gallery on my SmugMug site, TFitz4-Foolinabout.

I'm doing a little catching up with the kids, but I will post more later about the six amazing finalists, their day, and what was an agonizing task for the judges.

I would just like to say that they were all amazi...

08/11/08 - Re: Tunisia

Land Rovers...they border on illness. I should know. Frankly though, I have come to think of those, and this event as revealing the pioneer spirit of the great explorers.  .....common interests and common goals, etc.. no option but to make it.  There was no 'can't'.

Like those of us trying desperately to be part of this GS Trophy, those guys applied for what most would have considered inhuman pressure and conditions.  A rare breed. One of those video clips ...

I've bought a couple of dvd's about travel within Tunisia and should be receiving them today or tomorrow. Once I'm done seeing them I would gladly send them to anyone else in "The 20" to get better acquainted with this amazing country. I sure hope the teams that make it are taken to the ruins of carthage as that would be an fantastic opportunity.
