ABOUT ME
I have been riding BMWs for 10 years now, mostly GS. Riding is my addiction, as long as there is no ice on the roads, I will ride all year ‘round. There are few parts of the Pacific NW I have not had the joy to ride yet. Currently I ride mostly in SE Oregon’s high desert, on pavement and off. I am always looking for someone new to ride with.

03/04/08 - Re: Tires, and read drive seal.
As someone who changes their own tires, it does not take a fancy machine like auto tires do, much easier. Anyone who can change a Honda tire can do a BMW tire too. If you have a mechanical inclination, you may want to look over his shoulder to learn how. As for the seal, I assume you are riding a newer model with the single-sided swingarm, not much to worry about hurting if you take some basic care with removal and installation. Thats the extent of what I can share, as a...

It's probably something simple, a wire got unpluged somewhere, or at worst cut/broken. Check all of the connections at the switch, and where the wires go into the handlebars by the triple clamps. There are other possibilities, but start with the easy stuff, and work your way up.

That KLR would sure make a great mount for doing this too, if I didnt already have the 2 GSes, I would definitely be considering one of the 650 thumpers, they will get you down the road at a reasonable pace, aren't too heavy in the dirt, and are not badly priced too boot. But by all means, try to get as many test rides on as many machines as you can before making a purchase. Good luck and enjoy the decision making process.

I do exactly these kinds of activities with my 1100GS or my GSPD. I live in the middle of some of the best outdoor recreation areas in the country, and get out whenever I can. The GSes are quite manageable for 150 miles of pavement and 10 miles of gravel/dirt, or 10 miles of pavement and 150 miles of dirt. Taking my machines into very remote places is a regular thing. All this said, I have ridden off road for 25 years now, and been a dual sport rider since I could legall...
01/05/08 - Re: Batteries.
Westco makes a good batery for these machines too, I have one in both my bikes, but the Oilhead takes a smaller battery. The Westco works, but is a little on the weak side in colder weather, I previously had a Odyssey in the machine and was much happier with it. Westco is the cheapest option available, but not by enough to be a deal breaker IMHO.
