MONTEREY BIG SUR LOOP

Here’s a great ride to do out of Monterey or Carmel. You’ll find some pictures in the corresponding gallery under my profile.

Carmel Valley Road is rural and varied. Some sections are smooth and clean, and others not so much. I’ve seen everything from dual-sports to cruisers to GSX-R type bikes on that road, so don’t let a little pavement imperfection stop you.

You can gas up in Greenfield or King City or even on the Hunter-Liggett military preserve. Just ask the guard when you enter the preserve for directions.

Riding through Hunter-Liggett is generally peaceful and serene. Occasionally I’ve seen military units doing some drills. They’ll wave if you will. Be sure to have your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance with you, or else they won’t let you onto the military preserve.

The descent to Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean is supreme. You’ll enjoy stunning views when you can lift your eyes from the narrow, twisting asphalt. Make sure to stop on your way down, so you can take it all in.

Once you reach PCH, head north for about five miles and you’ll come to Lucia. It’s a nice place to have lunch, with more great ocean views and breezes. Check out the general store for excellent hand-made soaps. Hey, it may sound silly, but when you shower up after the ride, you’ll enjoy the quality soap.

Further north you’ll ride through the unparalleled switchbacks of Big Sur… perfect pavement, nice rhythm, gorgeous scenery.

Eventually you’ll find yourself back in Carmel or Monterey. If you had lunch in Lucia, take some time to relax before dinner. If you skipped lunch, find the nearest restaurant or pub and dig in.

The complete loop is about 180 miles.
